Would you keep trying to offer “milk”?

My son is allergic to actual milk. (Not lactose intolerant – actually allergic)

So I have tried many many milk alternatives… soy milk, rice milk, almond milk, vanilla soy milk, chocolate almond milk…

I have tried different cups… even offering it from “MY” cup so he feels like he is getting something of mommy’s.

No matter what, he will spit it out. He’ll throw the cup across the room, refuse to try it… and it’s not like you can force a kid to swallow.

I’ve tried the docs suggestion to keep offering it and not offering anything else to drink. He does NOT eventually drink it.

I have thrown away a lot of “milk”.

I think it’s stupid to keep throwing away money on something he simply refuses to swallow.

I make sure I offer him other things that contain calcium, protein, vitamins…

He’s healthy, happy, active, good appetite…

Do I really really truly need to keep trying? It’s been several months and he has not swallowed a single sip.
He will be two in 9 days. I kept him on soy formula as long as I possibly could for the nutrients. I think he was about 18 months or so when he finally quit drinking that too.

I don’t give him any soda or kool-aid. He does get juice, but I try to go toward vegetable juices when possible. And he’ll drink water

I would ditch the milk and increase his intake of other calcium rich foods. Also supplement with a multi vitamin. If he doesn’t like he doesn’t like it.

I was told that my son was allergic to the protien in cows milk. It would cause him to have diarrhea, get a rash, fever so on and so on. So I treid the soy milk and all that other stuff. He just doesn’t like milk. SO…I talked to his doctor and since he was perfectly healthy I was told not to force anything on him. I wouldn’t even bother him with it anymore.

My 2nd one wouldn’t drink any sort of milk once she came off the breast. I wouldn’t worry, there’s loads of other things with calcium and protein. She loves eating things like hummous, marinated tofu, baked beans, etc. I don’t see why we’re almost forced to force milk into kids. As long as they’ve got a good diet there’s no problem. Maybe look up some vegan websites for alternative recipes. I found this recipe the other day and couldn’t believe how quickly the whole family wolfed it down, much better than a glass of milk!:

Spinach Pesto

1 (10 ounce) package frozen spinach, defrosted and wrung dry in a kitchen towel
1-2 garlic cloves
4-5 sprigs fresh Italian parsley
1 (12 ounce) box silken tofu
1/2 lemon, juice of
salt (to taste)
pepper (to taste)
1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese, plus more for topping
1 dash sesame oil (optional)

Add garlic and parsley to food processor and pulse until garlic is finely minced.
Add tofu, spinach, lemon juice and sesame oil (if using) and process until smooth.
Add salt and pepper to taste and parmesan (if using) and process until just mixed, tasting and adding more salt and pepper if needed.
Toss with hot pasta (I like this with whole wheat linguini), and serve with crusty bread

I would stop trying to give him milk. Alternative ‘milks’ are expensive and he can get the vitamins that he needs in other foods. How old is your son, if he is over 2 then I would start giving him vitamins. That should help his little body.
You know what is best for your son.

My daughter threw her bottle across the room and yelled “juice” at 10 months. That was the end of the bottle, and of her drinking milk. She’s now 35 and about to have her second child and hasn’t touched milk. I made sure she got lots of calcium through other things and she was fine. Be prepared for the schools to give you a hard time. I had a to write a note every year so they wouldn’t force her to drink the milk that came with lunch. The exceptions were some things made with milk-pudding, ice cream and cheese. Perhaps you can find soy versions of these although I’ve tasted soy cheese and it was pretty terrible.
