Will Parakeets starve them selves?



My older parakeet hates her food, my mom said she will get the one that she likes Tuesday. My question is this. I have nothing else to feed her but the food she refuses to eat. Can my baby make it through the night and afternoon with out food? She has been eating millet treats, but that is it. My Parakeet won’t starve her self right? Birds don’t starve them selves do they?

She does have food in her cage right now, just not the one she likes.
It was a new food, that we by mistake got. We just went out today to get the right food. How fast should I be removing the millet treats? I want her to get use to eating the real food again. If I put a apple in with her, one who has never had it, would that be a bad or good thing? She is about 6-7 years of age.
She is back to normal and active. Thanks for the prayers and help. God Bless you†

We got the the old food back, and she is eating. Praise God†

Until then, feed her cooked brown rice, cooked pasta, fruits and veggies, whole wheat bread and other healthy human foods. No avacado or pits/seeds from fruit.

Parrots have been known to starve to death before they will eat something they don’t recognize as food.

Make sure she eats something, even if it is apples, sunflower seeds, lettuce….

When trying to switch their foods, it can cause digestive upset if they aren’t phased in gradually. Monitor her closely and have your vet’s number on hand just in case she starts to exhibit signs such as closing her eyes, puffing up, sitting on the bottom of her cage or falling off her perch.

Birds can go perhaps a day without food but it can cause sickness, they absolutely cannot go without water. Make sure her water is filled up and clean.

Edited for update: Phase the new food in gradually over the course of about two/three weeks. Adjust the ratios little by little until he is eating the new stuff. Monitor it closely to make sure that he is eating the new food. Apple is fine to put in there. If she doesn’t accept it right away don’t feel bad. Keep offering. Remember to take out any fruit and veg that has been offered for more than 4 hours as this can cause mould and lead to aspgerillosis and/or bacterial problems. If you have a close bond with her, try hand feeding too as this helps her accept the item as food. You can remove the millet straight away if she has the old food there. The reason why you gradually introduce is because the bird needs to build up the right bacteria in their digestive system to process the new food. An overload of the new food with no “good” bacterial enzymes to break down the food leads to problems in digestion and sickness because the system wont readily aborb the nuitrients of the food.

yes, birds are picky and will starve rather than eat something they don’t want. But at least he is eating millet. Was it his normal food that he stopped eating or is it a new brand that he doesn’t like. If he stopped eating his regular food, he should be seen by a vet. If you were trying to change his food, give him his old food, and slowly introduce new food. Birds have a very high metabolic rate and always need food available.
