Why does soy milk spoil in plastic bottles?

Soy milk is sold in cardboard containers. Is this to save the environment, or does it have to do with the soy milk spoiling? Twice, I have put soy milk in a plastic water bottle and it spoiled long before the same batch of soy milk that remained in the original cardboard container. Does something in the plastic react with something in the soy?
