Sugar alcohols — like isomalt, xylitol, sorbitol, maltitol — are not really alcohols; they’re reduced-calorie sweeteners that don’t behave in exactly the same way as a glucose-based sweetener. That makes them good for “sugar-free” candies, etc. Sugar alcohols provide about half the amount of calories as sugars and other carbohydrates.
So the calories come from the sugar alcohols, and the “sugar free” candy really isn’t.
