When do you start feeding baby anything other than milk?
When do you start introducing rice cereal or step 1 baby food to an infant? My daughters 12 weeks and i know that a lot of people say 4 months, so do i wait until 16 weeks? Or will she show me some signs when she’s ready?

I was told by my ped to wait until 6 months. Thats the reccommened. its what I’ve heard alot. ask ur babys doc
Hey darlin.
Yes, the book says 4 months but every baby is different. Make up a small amount of rice cereal and try her on it. The worst outcome is that she spits it out.
Hope this helps.

How can you tell if your baby is ready for solids? Here are a few hints:
Is your baby’s tongue-thrust reflex gone or diminished? This reflex, which prevents infants from choking on foreign objects, also causes them to push food out of their mouths.
Can your baby support his or her own head? To eat solid food, an infant needs good head and neck control and should be able to sit up.
Is your baby interested in food? A 6-month-old baby who stares and grabs at your food at dinnertime is clearly ready for some variety in the food department.
If your doctor gives the go-ahead but your baby seems frustrated or uninterested as you’re introducing solid foods, try waiting a few days or even weeks before trying again. Since solids are only a supplement at this point, breast milk and formula will still fill your baby’s basic nutritional needs.
6 months, not 4.
These are signs that she’s ready:
* Baby can sit up well without support.
* Baby has lost the tongue-thrust reflex and does not automatically push solids out of his mouth with his tongue.
* Baby is ready and willing to chew.
* Baby is developing a “pincer” grasp, where he picks up food or other objects between thumb and forefinger. Using the fingers and scraping the food into the palm of the hand (palmar grasp) does not substitute for pincer grasp development.
* Baby is eager to participate in mealtime and may try to grab food and put it in his mouth.
All of these things generally happen around 6 months.
Being a bigger baby, being a hungry baby, being a certain age are not good reasons to start solids.
She’ll let you know when she’s ready, don’t rush it.
you can start feeding her other than milk after she completes her four months. If she is a healthy baby you can start by yourself.
i dont really know . i started feeding my child food at 3 months he got really fat though.
That’s an excellent question for your pediatrician, who knows your child’s needs.
As a general rule, but every baby is different, they say 4-6 months. Milestone-wise, they say if your baby can sit supported without slumping and has lost the tongue-thrust reflex, that she is ready for first foods.
Don’t be tempted to try too early–that can lead to food allergies that could have been avoided. Also, if you are breastfeeding, it is recommended to exclusively breastfeed for 6 months before introducing other foods.
My doctor gave the go-ahead for rice cereal at 5 months and veggies at about 5.5, but your doc will know more for your child.
i have 4 kids and i always gave it to them when they could handle it just try it and if you think shes taking to it well then continue! i never went by what the books and stuff said every child is different. I was feeding my kids at 2 months and not baby food i was giving them stuff like mashed potato’s and you know just soft mushy foods…. my kids never would eat baby food. Good luck and im sure you and ur baby will figure out what works for you
around 6 months is when you usually start introuducing solid foods and that is what most pediatricians recomend, 4 months is still a little young although, you can try to experiment at 4 months but really formula and or breast milk is all they need for the first 6 months.
i don’t know about anyone else but i started giving my son cereal when he was about 3 months and baby food about 3 1/2 months. yeah they say wait til about 4-6 months but if your child is hungry and not satisfied with just milk give them a little bit and see how he/she is going to do. mine did just fine. and my son’s weight is perfect!
well every baby is different.
most drs recommend starting rice cereal between 3-4 months and introducing jar food between 4-6 months.
(my niece started rice cereal at 3 months and jar food at 4.5 months)
you may want to check with your baby’s dr before you start anything.
you could slowely introduce few spoonfuls of mashed veggie by the end of the 5th or early 6th month…
always try one veggie or fruit at a time…to check for any allergies.
HI, I will have to agree with Diet C on this one. I always started my kids at 6 months and on foods and cereals that could easily be digested. The minute you start feeding them solids is the minute their Bowell’s change. Which mean constipation could start. Yuck! So i would definitely talk to baby’s doctor before doing anything. Good luck!
I don’t understand why the people saying 6 mos are getting thumbs down. Lets read a book here “It is said that infants at 6 mos of age have a more developed stomach to digest foods and are less likely to have ulcers and digestive problems” It is up to the doctor if they feel your child is ready to have solids at 4 mos they are the one with the training not us. I agree with ones who give you the signs about the tongue movement and holding the head.
try about 3 months. yes give her step 1 and also give her milk. what i mean is give her a little bit of baby food and then give her about 2 oz. of milk. my niece is 6 months and on step 2. but no solid foods.
