What’s your family’s cheap meal?
Every family has at least one meal that’s super cheap, and easy to make. What’s yours? And what does it cost? And how many does it feed?
My ex-inlaws, loved toast soldiers and beans. Basically Heinz beans and toast cut up (didn’t resemble soldiers) 1 loaf bread, 3 cans heinz beans $6 (family of 6)
Mine is bean soup- 1 Bag of lentils, 1 carrot, 1 potato, water Less than $5
Yea, I never embraced the toast soldiers…too strange for me.

usually hot dogs lol.
That toast and beans thing sounds nasty.
Grilled Cheese and tomato soup.
spaghetti lol
spaghetti noodles- $1
spaghetti sauce- $1.49
1 lb hamburger meat- i always buy 10 pounds at a time. so im not sure of the price :/
still super cheap and in my family feeds 4 people with left overs for lunch
Piggies in a blanket
or
cheesy potato casserole- 1 big can of cream of chicken, one tub of sour cream, one lbs of shredded cheese, 1 big bag of shredded frozen hashbrowns. Mix and put in a big pan and put in oven until browns on edges. Delicious and is pretty big
Peas and pasta.
1 box of small noodles like macaroni, 1 can of peas, 1 medium onion, a little garlic and olive oil. You can add things like basil to taste. Feeds a good number and costs less than $5.
Its so simple to make and very tasty.
Leftovers! LOL, very cheap, easy, and quick clean up.
One meal everyone loves that is VERY easy is tomato soup and grilled cheese. I can usually feed 10 people for about $7, and less if there’s a sale.
Hot dogs
or soup and sandwiches..
1 can of chili w/bns, a couple of potatoes, and 1/2 lb of gr beef. Less than $5
salisbury steak and tatos
swhans man!!!!
Ours is potato soup. And, I got lucky last week and got bags of potatoes at our local grocer last week on sale buy one get one free. So, for $3 I got two bags of potatoes, and half a gallon of milk will do the job making it more than once, milk here is about $2.50 for a half gallon. Add in some onion soup mix, if you want, and some garlic, and voila! Feed a family of 5 for less than $5 (because with the ingredients listed you can make it 3 times or so in a two week period if you had to)
Dinty Moore beef stew with dumplings…
spaghetti….
pork and beans over french fries.
Consequently, these are all recipes that my husband brought to the marriage table from his youth. I never eat any of these meals, but my kids and my husband love them, so I fix them, and a salad for myself.
During winter:
Pumpkin soup (butternut pumpkin, aka butternut squash in the US)
Costs about $5-7 depending on how much the pumpkin is, feeds the five of us with some left over for the next days lunch, once the kids are bigger and the newborn can eat, it will still be enough. All needed is pumpkin, potato, shallots, stock, salt, pepper, cream and bread (for the others, as I’m allergic).
tostadas
refired beans chesse tortillas lettuce tomatoes
u put the tortillas in the oven and let thm bake until harden , u can buy canned refired beans or make urself 1 bag about a pound is undera dollar
cut up lettuces and tomatoes and shreddar chesse
Oh my mom usually just makes some
mushroom soup or any type of soup
and grilled cheese. Hah, that usually costs around
8 bucks, and it feeds the 4 of us.
( About 2 cans of soup, package of bread, and cheese. )
fried dough. okay it sounds weird but wait – you take those frozen yeast rolls that aren’t cooked yet, you let them thaw and rise. then you take them and divide out little sections and “fry” them (really its just a saute pan with a little veggie oil or butter). for like $5 you can get 2 packages and its more than enough for us for dinner and breakfast the next day. we could have more left overs but hubby is a piggy.
All of our meals.
Spaghetti: 3 cans (little ones) of tomato sauce and paste, various seasonings, and french bread about 6? (our beef is from Papaw)
Fajitas: Whole roasting chicken, one bell pepper, one onion, some seasoning stuff we found (salt free!!), tortillas, cheese, etc about 5?
Chicken Pot Pie (same chicken, we use about 1/3 a recipe) so chicken, frozen mixed veggies, and homemade crust about 5?
Moma Soup (she always made it when we were little and she was broke) 1 pound beef, 2 cans tomato sauce (little), can corn, 2-3 med potatoes, Tony Chachere’s, some other seasonings, and a cup lima beans maybe $4 for something that will last 3 days?
All of those are for 4, and left overs.
ADD: I buy whole chickens and stay stocked up on canned stuff (generic brands too) and noodles and spices. So I’m not 100% sure on prices…. But those are my fast and tired meals that we’re gonna be eating LOTS of…..
