What’s the difference between cayenne pepper and hot paprika?
I LOVE cayenne pepper – I put it on almost everything I eat. I’ve never tried any kind of paprika but I saw it next to the cayenne pepper and almost got it because it looks so similar! Does hot paprika taste like cayenne pepper? And is it as hot as cayenne pepper?
Thanks!

cayenne pepper is real hot and paprika is more zesty than really hot
From what I have been able to find is both cayenne and hot paprika are indeed hot but do not taste the same. I probably would be interesting to try both in a taste comparison.
Hot paprika tastes nothing like cayenne. Cayenne is nice and hot, but hot paprika really isn’t hot. Personally, I don’t know why they call it ‘hot’ paprika. It’ll be nice to use in Hungarian Goulash and such, though.
They’re made from different peppers, so they taste different. I love cayenne, too. I also enjoy hot paprika, probably because I love the taste of the paprika peppers whether they’re hot, smoky or mild. If you like the flavor of red bell peppers, which is the closest thing I can compare them to, you’ll like hot paprika. Most people use paprika as an accent just for the color, but it’s a delicious spice and deserves more use. Chicken paprikash (paprika) is delicious, but so is chili when made with lots of paprika, whether regular or hot.
They are that same. They both belong to the Capsicum family. Paprika means capsicum for Hungarians.
There are many-many variations. Some are hotter, some are less hot and some are even sweet.
Depends what you are after. The Hungarians have a small, round variety called ‘cherry paprika’. One paprika – one byte. I tried one, couldn’t breathe. Literally, almost suffocated. They gave me some strong snaps called ‘palinka’. Washes off the oil that gives you the cramp in the throat. Some of them like it, but most Hungarians can’t stand hot stuff.
The Polish has a ‘paprika snaps’. It’s 80% by volume alcohol with really hot paprika-powder floating in it. Horrific stuff if you ask me.
Some help: if the food is too hot, you don’t feel any taste …
I found out the difference by taste. Cayenne is much hotter than the paprika I have. The lemonade master cleanser calls for cayenne pepper but I did not have it so used paprika and it was fine. I finally got the cayenne and used it in the drink. I don’t know if I can use it again because it is so hot. Wow! Big difference for me. I don’t know about the peppers it comes from but from the taste, there is a big difference.
