What is the difference between a fruit and a vegetable?

Some have told me that you know it’s a fruit when it bares it’s own seed but then what is squash and Okra and eggplant? Are they a type of fruit? Just a question I was wondering about during a discussion I had with some one and they told me the above and my question was regarding the squash, okra and eggplant.
Ok, I am not sure if every one was following me very well. What I am trying to say is … If fruit bares it’s own seed then are green beans, squash, okra, cucumbers, and eggplant’s fruits or veggies?

fruits have seeds

Fruits bares there own seeds. AND squash, okra and eggplant I think are vegetables. I THINK. Tomatoes are fruits because they do have seeds. mabye some help maybe not. i think squash, okra, and eggplant do bare seeds just we dont know. just a thought.

squash okra and the eggplant are like the platypus. the only real difference is that fruit bears its own seeds.

It is true, fruits are seed bearing. Vegetables are root plants. Celery, potato, etc. An eggplant and okra start off as flowers, only fruits start off as flowers on a plant.
We get confused about what is technically a fruit and vegetable b/c of the way the grocery marts are setup.

** Yes, okra, eggplant and squash are fruits.

I don’t know, but I am answering so I can keep up with the question and MAYBE find out.

fruits are fruits and veggetables are veggetables

Fruits live in North Hollywood.

Vetetables live in a garden.

A fruit has seeds and a vegetable doesn’t.

I don’t know, they are both good for you. And in some cases they both have seeds. You just have to guess what you are eating.

Fruits have their seeds on the inside

therefore technically a tomato is a fruit

A vegetable is any food coming from a plant, including grains and fruits.

Fruit is the part of the plant bearing seed, true. This holds true for plants that are not edible as well.

Squash, Okrah, Eggplant, tomatoes, etc. are all fruits though most people only think of drupes (peaches, plums, cherries, etc. with pits) or the Rose family (apples, pears, etc.) and citrus (orange, lenmon, lime, etc.) as fruits.

any farmer out there?? plz help

fruits have sugar in them, and vegetables do not.

a fruit is sweet and a vegetable is protien

Fruit is sweet…Veggies are not. (And, a tomatoe is a fruit, weird, I know.)
