What is the best way to release a trout without it dieing?

50% of the trout I want to release die in the water. Even when I hold it in the water and let it catch it’s breath again. Then if they die I feel bad and end up eating it so its not a wasted life. It happened to 2 trout I caught today. This mostly happens to me with rainbows.

If you use bait and they are deeply hooked, or hooked in the gills, they will probably die. If hooked on the lip, they should live, if you handle them properly. Don’t take them out of the water, if possible. You might try to grab the hook with pliers and unhook them without touching them if you can. If you do handle them, wet your hands first and be gentle. If using a net, cotton nets are recommended.

It sounds like more than one problem firstly are you deep hoking them, if you re its chances of survival are small and you must kill it, however if its hooked in the lip, don’t remove it from the water a hemostat is good for removing hooks flies etc, then hold the fish beneath the surface by its tail then with your other hand splash the water(sounds crazy but it works as it oxygenates the water around the fish) when the fish starts to struggle let it go) also don’t retrieve it too quickly if you know you will be releasing it as it damages their swim bladder, don’t remove the fish from the water and get the hook out as quick as you can.

Use a barb less hook ,bend down the barb or file it off learn how to use a fly rod and fly fish with Barb less hooks .
