What is the best way to heat left-over rice using a microwave oven?

Using an 800-watt microwave oven for one cup of left-over Asian cooked rice, how long and how high (power) should be the oven be set? Usually the rice comes out too dry & not fluffy as when it was newly cooked. I’ve tried sprinkling it with water before microwaving. I’ve also tried “steamer” type microwave pots (where one puts a small amount of water under the bowl of rice to be heated). All to no avail – the rice still comes out dry and not fluffly. Perhaps there’s a problem with the settings of time & power?

To successfully reheat cooked white or brown rice, place it in a container that allows at least 2-3 inches of extra room. Sprinkle with water, vegetable broth, or mushroom broth just to dampen the top. You can cover the container and microwave on HIGH for 1-2 minutes, depending on your microwave and the amount of rice. Or you can preheat your oven to 400 degrees, wrap the moistened rice tightly in aluminum foil, and allow it to heat for 5-8 minutes, depending on the amount of rice. Both methods will give you a steaming bowl of soft rice. Top with canned tomatoes and canned mushrooms, thawed frozen peas, or fresh or thawed frozen broccoli or cauliflower florets. Garnish with granulated garlic flakes, nutritional yeast, chopped walnuts, almonds, peanuts or cashews, or, if you have the time, chopped fresh cabbage tossed with a small amount of soy sauce.

I use the steamer and have always been able to rejuvenate left over rice. You’ll have to practice…. trial & error tghis one.

The best is the steamer method: (steamer with hot water boiling on bottom level and upper level to place food that has holes to allow steam to seep over, all that on top of a stove), but it takes practice. Place the rice in an Asian rice bowl, and put it in the steamer when it is hot and boiling and make sure you cover. I should not take more than 5 minutes, check the rice every 2 minutes.

Microwave method: wrap the entire rice using ceran plastic cling wrap. place it in the microwave and heat on high for about 1 minute. Check hotness then heat again if necessary, make sure your turn over the rice first.
If it’s hot for your hands it’s hotter for your taste buds.

It should come out fine so long as it’s the first reheating and the rice has not been in the rice warmer for more than 6 hours.

Enjoy.
