What is the best way to flavor (sweeten) homemade Yogurt?
I got a yogurt maker for christmas and have been going yogurt crazy. So far I have been adding strawberry preserves, but it doesn’t seem sweet enough (compared to store bought). I am planning on buying some vanilla extract today but don’t know how much of it to put in 2 cups of yogurt and how much sugar to add? or even know if granulated sugar is the best sweetener to use? As you can tell I am a novice at almost all types of cooking. Any other yogurt flavoring ideas would be great too.

Hi, I’d use honey, it’s sweet, natural, good for you and has the added benefit of helping to somewhat preserve the yogurt.
I would make a simple syrup and add a little at a time until you get what you want. Honey is also a good way to sweeten yogurt as well. If you do not want to change the consistency of the yogurt you could try powdered sugar. It would dissolve better than granulated sugar but will not loosen up or make the yogurt runny.
Condition your palate away from the expectation of store bought yogurt sweetness and learn to appreciate the subtlties of your creations.
I agree with the poster about usuing honey as a sweetner as I used it for my homemade as well. However I prefer to eat it plain and save the calories. If you save 30 calories a day, it equates to around 3 pounds a year. It all adds up!
