What is the best bait or lure for brown trout?
I have a vacation home upstate ny, and in the back there is a river where there is brown trout. I would like to know what the best bait is to use for brown trout or what is the best lure to use?

There is no “Best bait” For a fish. Some may work better than others, but that could change over the course of a week or an hour.
One good way to discover what they are eating is to mess around randomly until you catch one, cut open its stomach, and see what it’s been eating. If there is anything in there, you can use a lure that resembles that, if there is nothing in there, you’re in luck! They’re likely hungry, and liable to eat just about everything.
Try worms or powerbait.
You can also try spinners like panther martin or rooster tails.
As G G said, there is no best bait, it is all a matter of preference.
big browns are meat eaters. if it is legal in your river, l would use live minnows or a nightcrawler. helgrammites are good if you can locate any. also good for smallmouth bass.
It all depends on your conditions, season and how big the river or stream is. Right now in colorado the trout are biting viciously over parachute hoppers and elk hair caddis, but ny is much more humid and doesn’t have the same river conditions either, so you may want a small spinner bait that has some red and blue and a tiny speck of green. I can’t tell you how it will work for sure because i’ve never fished the eastern shore. Mabye a grasshopper on a hook would work but I would start out with what has served the fishing community well for hundreds of years, a large nightcrawler or grub on a octopus hook. I know my answers are less than satasfactory but it is the best i can throw your way. Happy fishin’!!!
