What is in your baby’s food and formula?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAcwhNHGgOw Melamine has been allowed in American baby formula in trace amounts even though studies have determined that it is harmful to children in any amount. Even if it is safe, it serves no purpose and should be removed.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/11/27/infant.formula.melamine/index.html It seems like the liquid form of Nestle Good Start is the worst as it is the one testing positive.

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/515113409 Here is a petition to take melamine out of formula for babies’ safety.

Another point I wanted to bring up is this:

http://www.yelp.com/topic/glendale-fda-allows-mold-rodent-hairs-insect-parts-maggots-and-eggs-in-food-yum

Yes, the FDA allows certain amounts of bug parts, rodent hairs, feces, etc. into your food but in small quantities these things are natural and fairly safe. I have been unable to find out how much of these natural contaminants are allowed in things like Gerber and Beechnut baby food but just know that these things ARE allowed in our food and they DO NOT have to label it. You might buy a can of mushrooms and it just says “ingredients: mushrooms, water” but there are actually maggot parts allowed in.

I’m not saying there is anything wrong with buying premade baby food (I did use some myself) but it seems to me that making your own baby food is not only cheaper, but you can inspect the produce before you use to to insure its not full of maggots, rat hairs, etc.

To make this into a question: Were you aware of these things? And do they bother you?

Its no reason to panic, we ingest this stuff everyday. I just think its a good thing for everyone to know what they are ingesting so that they can try to avoid these things if they so choose.

Please star this if you want other moms to get a heads-up on what the FDA is allowing their babies to eat.
I have to agree with DYOT that formula is a much bigger concern than some rat poop. I personally never used formula and wouldn’t use it so it never concerned me but my nephew was formula fed and I worry about his and other babies’ safety.

I was aware of these things. That is why my babby doesn’t eat those things!
Those insect parts and rat hairs and terds have allowable amounts allowed into any food processed in a factory! Blah.

Yes! It does bother me! These things, particularly the Nestle Formula, are marketed as safe! And poor women actually believe they are an acceptable alternative for breastmilk!

“Were you aware of these things? And do they bother you?”

Yes. Not much. Maggots are probably a good source of protein…

I’ve never bought pre-made baby food, but I wouldn’t think it would make a great deal of difference as far as avoiding trace amounts of rodent urine &c goes. I don’t think many people grind their own flour, and subsequently they eat a lot of junk ground into their bread and pasta… File under ‘can’t avoid’ and stop worrying. In many ways we have the cleanest, safest food supply in history.

Formula is more dangerous to babies for what it _doesn’t_ contain than the crap it does. Not that the melamine is benign, but.

I was never aware of this when I had my first 16 years ago, but I am 32 weeks pregnant and I am aware of it. Its gross and disgusting. I’m now afraid to vaccinate my child because of all the controversy of autism. My sister in law 15 year old has autism and she swears it was the needles he got.
I have no idea what to feed my child, I was hoping the organic baby food would be better, but it has the same crap in as other baby foods.
I heard their is Cyanuric Acid in 3 tests of Nestle Good Start Supreme instant formula. Also other major manufactures-Abbot Lab. Nestle,Mead Johnson, And McNeil. Some baby shampoo and baby lotion have trace amounts of Carcinogenic Chemical and that is cancerous.
How in the world did me and my daughter survive all this. I know the bottles are now BPA free, but not when I was younger or my daughter. I wonder what are in diapers because I am sure its something horrific, but government says its save in small amounts.
What are we to do?
edit-My 16 year old daughter was so picky she didn’t eat baby food out of the baby food jar or pablum and was on formula until she was 5 months, and put on regular milk(our doctor said it was fine). I tried pabulum and baby food but she hated it. She was at the age were she just ate regular people food.
With this baby I plane to make the baby food myself instead of using regular baby food. I would love to breast feed if it works out. I’m on medication and may not be able to.

This is why my son was never bottle fed nor did we feed him from a jar. Like the woman above me was saying, there are more things out there that are equally toxic. I wonder if anyone knew that formaldehyde is in a lot of baby lotions, shampoos, soap including brand names like Johnson & Johnson and Huggies. Of course, you can’t avoid it all, but some great chemical free products are out there. You just have to be cautious about what you buy.

Thinking is right. You can not duplicate breastmilk, it has so many great components it would be impossible to supplement. One of the best being glyconutrients.

Jade, my son also had latching issues after birth and in many cases a good lactation consultant can help you. I was very fortunate to have one. Also, there are ways of making your own formula that you don’t have to depend upon a company to sell you the right nutritious products for your baby. Learning to become self reliant is the best option, because it’s obvious that you can’t put any faith into the products you’re being sold.

I’d like to add that milk banks are also an option, and if I had trouble feeding my second that would be my first choice. I promise you, there is nothing that can replicate the perfection of breast milk. Just like nothing can replicate the perfection of cow’s milk for calves. Each species on this earth creates milk for it’s young for a very special reason.

Yes I was aware of it. Only because I work for a major food factory and I see what the FDA allows or misses. I work for a major food company and generally I don’t eat their food because of what they get away with. But I have heard from some of our bosses that we have the cleanest plant they have ever been to. Disturbing if you ask me, BUT I don’t think those things are necessarily dangerous, but it’s not fair that the label is supposed to be the control point, which is a huge FDA checkpoint. EVERYTHING in the can is supposed to be on that label and things like that are not mentioned or even the chance there being that in the can or jar.

Totally aware of it. Some of it bothers me, some of it doesn’t. Think about the bugs we eat in fruit jams, or even fresh fruit.

The chemicals are the ones that really bother me and I’m doing my best to eliminate a lot of that stuff from our house. All of our cleaners are comestible (edible really, not that you’d want to, but you could), my shampoos and such for myself and kids are organic and natural. I try to avoid anything that has “fragrance” in the ingredient list (it can contain anything really and they don’t have to list it).

I make some of my own baby food, but even that is originally processed somewhere (pasta, legumes, rice, etc) so you can’t avoid it all.

Even breastfeeding passes on chemicals that mom has ingested (though I firmly believe it is still a better option than a man made alternative and breastfed my first for 14 months and am going strong with my 10month old)

So, yes, it’s all good to know so that those choices can be made. Some mom’s won’t care, some will care too much. We all have to make our own choices.

yes i have heard of this and yes it does bother me. all of these women are making you sound like a criminal if you bottle feed. it’s not always a choice. my son wouldn’t latch on and i tried so hard to the point that he lost a pound in 3 days. so please stop acting ridiculous. the thing is – theres nothing me or anyone else can do about the formula. so we either hope our child latches on or pray that nothing happens to them.
