What do I add to chili to make it thicker?
So I added 2 lbs ground turkey, 1 can tomato sauce, 2 cans of spicy tomato’s, 1 large can of kidney beans (drained), 1 tbsp brown sugar, 3 packages of chili mix (i like it spicy), and a finely chopped saute’d large white onion. And half a cup of water (the recipe called for 1 cup, but I thought for sure it would be too watery). I put it in the slow cooker over night and this morning it seems kind of watery STILL. So… What else can I add to it to make it thicker?

boil it a little bit
Take some of the beans, mash them up, and use them to thicken the chili
take the top off the slow cooker to reduce the liquid
corn starch.
If you like your chili thicker, combine 1 Tbsp. cornstarch with about 1/4 cup water and blend well, then stir into the chili for the last 30 minutes of …
Now you made me hungry!
Try mashing the beans a little, it thicken it!
cornstarch or flour to absorb some of the liquid and make the sauce thicker.
I would add more hamburger(or in your case turkey)…makes it heartier & thicker. Top it off with some crackers (oyster crackers are my favorite) and shredded cheese…mmmm!
Try some tomato paste. Also, make sure the lid is off of the slow cooker. When the lid is on, steam condenses on the lid, and drips back into the chili, making it watery.
Corn flour or any starch, dilute flour with water then add to the gravy when the dish is almost ready.
Add about two tablespoons of cornstarch to a couple tablespoons of cold water (in a separate bowl) then set your crock pot to high. When the chili comes to a low boil add the cornstarch mixture. That should thicken it.
Tomato paste, it is for the purpose of thickening tomato based sauces. I also add bacon to my chili, for flavor purposes only though. Celery and mushrooms too.
Well in my opinion you could add a little flour,But it will only work if you add it just before we go in your bedroom for a couple of awesome hours. That is all there is too it,simple.Huh?
Try turning the slow cooker to low and letting it set another couple hours, it should solidify some.
For this time you might want to try adding instant mashed potatoes gradually ’til you get the thickness you want. Next time, of course, don’t add any water.
Tomato paste would be the best bet!
Good luck
Cornflour(best) will make it thicker and also regular flour(not as good, but will work). I’ve done it before and it does not effect the taste but will thicken the chili.
try a can of tomato soup. I always use it when I make chili.
Did you brown the turkey before putting it in the crock??
that frying/browning process takes a lot of water and grease out of the ground turkey or beef.
If it’s too watery, cook it with the lid off (stirring frequently) and cook off some of the water as steam. Cook it at a high temp so as not to cook the chili for a long time but a high temp will boil the water off faster.
tom
I have used mashed potato flakes many times to thicken sauces and soups. I suppose a little flour or corn starch would work too.
Hope this helps!
PS. I am also making spicy chili for dinner tonight, but my family likes it juicy so they can put tons of crackers in to thicken it. lol
I bought a Chili pack and it came with Masa FLour made especially for making Chili thicker GOOD LUCK!
TAKE THE LID OFF OF THE COOKER and let the water evaporate.. and add another VERY SMALL CAN of TOMATO PASTE. let simmer for like an hour and it should be ready to eat!
you can smash up some of the beans to thicken it or use flour or cornstarch. you might try using a mixture of tomato paste and tomato sauce in the future to get the consistency that you’re after. it’s easier to add water when you need to as opposed to looking for ways to thicken. good luck and happy eating!
Make a little slurry out of cornmeal or masa harina, and water. Stir that in and cook more and it should thicken up nicely while keeping the intended taste.
If it doesn’t work enough after 20 minutes, do another little slurry.
Try using corn flour (or regular flour if you dont have corn flour). Just add a teaspoon or two, stir it in, let it boil for about another few minutes and it should be ok then. Good luck!
Leave the lid off. If the lid is on the steam will just keep adding water to the chili. It should reduce in time. If not, I’d use cornstarch I guess. I made chili on sunday and added most of the things you used but no water and no chili packets–just chili powder and cumin. Mine cooked in about an hour. Next time I’d skip the water and seasoning packets.
the best answers are….tomato paste or letting it simmer longer and reduce. however next time use dry beans. they will release starch and be a natural thickener for the chili.
