What could I add to my bread recipe to make it more healthy?
I make bread in this automatic bread maker I borrowed from my mom. It’s really easy, you just pour all the ingredients in and it does the rest.
Anway, I use the honey whole wheat recipe and modify it a bit. Here’s what the recipe calls for:
-10 oz water
-1.5 tsp salt
-1.5 Tb butter
-1/3 cup honey
-3 tsp vital wheat gluten
-3 cups whole wheat flour
-1.5 tsp active dry yeast
Here’s what I’ve added to it:
-1/3 cup of rolled 5 grain whole wheats
-1/4 cup sesame seeds
Can you think of any other healthy ingredients I can add to my bread, that wouldn’t ruin the taste? I really can’t think of anything else besides some good oils like sesame seed oil or virgin olive oil, but I don’t know if that would effect the bread rising and baking correctly.

wheat germ, flax seed, are great additions to homemade bread & i would try this recipe with butter & then with olive oil to see the difference, maybe you might like the results with the olive oil as much & it is healthier…good luck

FLOUR: Wheat is the type of flour used in bread baking. It includes all-purpose, bread and whole wheat flours. Sometimes a small percentage of non-wheat flour and grains are added for interest and health to the recipe, such as Kamut, triticale, rye, oat, barley, buckwheat, millet, amaranth, teff, rice, potato, soy, tapioca, corn, quinoa and legume-based flours.
GRAINS: substitute a portion (try 25%) of the flour with a variety of grains, such as bran, rye, millet, oatmeal, cornmeal, wheat germ and cracked wheat to name just a few. The higher the proportion of whole grains you add, the heavier and smaller the loaf, since these grains contain little or no gluten.
Maybe some skim milk in place of the water and Lite butter instead of regular. You might also enjoy some very finely chopped nuts such as walnuts or almonds for added protein and omega-3 essential oils.
Personally I like to add some dry fruit in my recipe eg. apricots, dates. Yummy for breakfast

Oil would affect the recipie. I’d stick with add-ins

Chopped nuts and dried fruits will make a nice snacky kind of bread. Also, a tablespoon or two of ground flax seeds packs a nice wallop of Omega 3 and a bit of a nutty taste. You could also add some wheat germ (again, not all that much).
It’s a pretty healthy bread already. Depending on what you add to it the bread may be heavier or lighter (more protein means a heavier/tougher bread). As long as the yeast has sugar to eat (in the form of honey in this case) the bread will rise. SO as long as you don’t burn the bread, it should still be pretty edible (some experiments will be less successful than others though, I won’t lie to you
Oats or Muesli tastes very good in bread !
