What are the causes that make bean seeds rot when planted in excellent environmental conditions?

For a science project I planted some common bean seeds in pots with soil. I watered them enough so that they didn’t dry, and put them in sunlight’s reach. One week after, they haven’t sprouted and when I go and remove them, the seeds’ coating is broken, the interior (which is now bigger than the original seed) is white, and the seed altogether is very soft. Can anyone tell me what went wrong, even though they were watered and put in the sunlight?

The seed may have been damaged when they were sown or prior to sowing, the soil may have been packed too tightly, they may have been over watered.
Other than the lack of germination (sprouting) do the seeds look normal. Seeds do tend to soften and enlarge as they soak up water to use in growing.
