Looks interesting, but there is no information on the cost of this approach per barrel of finished product. The sun is fickle, and apparently one drawback is the question of what happens if the algae cool down too much on cloudy days. Temperature is key in these kinds of hothouse biofuel techniques. If the temperature of the slurry is maintained artificially, the cost rises significantly; if the system relies on the sun, there is the possibility that a batch will be ruined by weather fluxuations.

No, what one says he can do and what he can actually do are often two different things. His science is under scrutiny at public & private labs. no one is hailing his as the solution! A ponzi scheme?

As the article said, it’s nothing new. The problem has been to come up with a way of producing it economically. 100,000 gallons translates into less than 2500 barrels in a year. The US consumes 20,680,000 barrels of oil A DAY. As promising as the algae oil appears to be the technology is a long way away from making a dent in our overall energy consumption.

RESPONSE – A, I’m a dem who voted for Obama and B, the infrastructure required to develop production of algae oil to the level where it will make a dent on our overall oil usage will take years to develop and cost a lot of money. If you are telling me that my original answer is wrong, that we can have this oil over night, then I suggest that it is you who needs to develop your critical thinking skills.

Just want to answer about the algae/oil thing; I think it would be a wonderful thing to exploit this new thing. Eliminate the mideast stranglehold on the world, show Venezuela where they can stick it and (gasp!) give Russia ‘the finger’ as well. I have to ask- do you know if this new oil burns clean? If so, an added bonus of being ‘green’. We can grow algae anywhere, this could be tremendous.
