New email about toxic foods for dogs?

My mom emailed it to me today. As little as 7 grapes or raisins can be FATAL to your pooch. Also chocolate, cocoa, and two I did not know about…onions and macadamia nuts! If your pooch is a scrap food eater (either intentional or by some sneaky act) be careful! Did everyone already know about all these, or am I all alone on this? Do you know of any other toxic foods?

Yep, those are all on my list of things NEVER to let my dog near. I gave a friend of mine sh*t when she told me she’s been feeding her Shih Tzu grapes for ages!

There is also something in garlic that can have the same effect as onions, only the dog would need to eat a MUCH larger amount (we’re talking entire cloves!), because the toxin isn’t as concentrated or something. Garlic in small/moderate amounts depending on the dog’s weight is okay though, but I can’t imagine the breath would be very nice afterwards either way. :D

Yes, this information is true, though some of the e-mails that circulate overdramatize the risk. These foods can be toxic to dogs. The risk depends on both the dose and the size and existing health of the dog. Here is a good link for information on the raisin/grape issue. There are other websites that list the other foods.

Here’s another:

lots of stuff

coffee, avocado, salt, yeast dough, alcoholic beverages, macadamia nuts, fatty foods, anything sweetened with xylitol, and moldy or spoiled food.

yes…sugarless gum with Xylitol is toxic to dogs. More listed for food and plants that are toxic to dogs

I know.. I just recently read that raisins (same as grapes) are very dangerous for dogs..I feel terrible, when I would be eating Trail Mix I would give my begging moucher dog the raisins thinking it was best for her..needless to say she doesn’t get the raisins anymore, I tell her it’s poison.. I say that to her also when I am eating chocolate..and she seems to understand because it is very rare that she bothers anyone when they are eating these foods.

Most of these depends on the dog. Like my dad has a cocker spaniel that jumped up on the table a couple years back and ate and big pan of brownies and it didn’t effect him one bit. But then I’ve also met dogs that will pass out just from the smell of chocolate. It’s pretty scary, to think about all these things affecting your best friend!

That is very strange but i don’t believe it. My dog sits with me when i eat grapes or macadamia nuts and eat with me, he loves grapes, mandarins and apple, he is alive and well , has never been to a vet so i find it a bit hard to believe. I have heard about chocolate and a friend of mine’s dog ate a whole box of chocolates that he stole from under the Christmas tree he is well too had no after-effects .
