Nature or Nurture – Physical Development (Have I discovered how to build a linebacker?)?

My daughter, who will turn 11 in April, is huge. She’s 5′ 4″ and weighs 155 lbs (10 lbs more than I did in high school) and it’s mostly muscle – she’s built like a linebacker.

She has done sports since pre-school – first gymnastics and dance, now soccer. She practiced for hours even when she was 4 – she just enjoyed it. Since she was 6 she’s done squats and other calisthenics, which since 8 she’s done with small weights (2-3 lbs, now 6 lbs dumbells).

Her diet, since she started eating solid food, has been skewed toward protein. She’d eat the strained beef right out of the jar, not mixed with anything. She soon moved on to soybeans and, at 13 months, sashimi. Until she was 4 we lived in Virginia so as a toddler she got a LOT of peanuts. She eats the other food groups but for a long time it was a bit light on the carbs and real heavy on the protein, mostly from lean sources.

The siblings ate normal diets and are normal size.

Did I grow a giant or is it a coincidence?

What are her mother and father built like? You gave us the nurture part, but your missing the nature part.

I believe it is a mixture of both. The working out at an early age will definitely help her become stronger. Do not let her lift even moderate weights until she is fully developed. It will do more harm than good. I bet she has really good core strength anyways.

I plan to do the same when I have a kid. Mostly so the kid will be a super athlete and make daddy lots of money. (im kidding…sort of)

I beleive that is a combination of both. Everyperson has what God gave them. Its just a matter of bring out all the potential. That potential is limited by nature. For example, if a child is born with no legs….even with all the nuture a parent can give….the are most likly not going to be an gold medal winning sprinter. But a person with the potential to be that sprinter can not become that if not nutured to use that potential. The human body is an amazing machine, but like any machine each person has their limits to what they can and can’t do…..and in my opinion there are more people who DO NOT reach their potential because of the way they were nutured than people that do because of the nuture part….which is kind of sad.

Like someone said, you missed the nature part…how big are mom and dad? Is she eating organic meat, or all the crap with pesticides and hormones in it?

155 pounds is really unhealthy for someone who’s only 5’4″, even if it’s all muscle.
