My son is 3 1/2 months. What else can i feed him, along with his milk,if anything?

Ok heres the deal: he’s almost 4 months old, and his doctor told me to feed him rice cereal with his milk(started when he was 2 months because he was so underweight). Can I start giving him juice, too? I’ve already tried it and he likes it, but my in-laws (who haven’t had any children of there own in about 20 years) said it was a bad idea. Can I give him watered-down Juicy-Juice? And when can I start spoon feeding him baby food?

They say you shouldn’t start giving solids until 4-6 months (in your case, since the dr. advised you to start with it in the milk earlier, that’s different). You might want to wait until his 4 months appt. and ask the ped. then, just in case his little tummy isn’t quite ready for those things.

honestly i would wait on the juice. but that is just me.. but for food.. normally start in the 4 to 6 months age range on solids.. but go with veggies first.. once they get the tast of fruit it is hard to get them to eat the other stuff:)

juicy juice, even though it has no sugar added-does have sugar. I would feed him milk, and then some more milk and nothing more. He needs the calories from that and not juice and water. He has a tiny body!!! A little juice and water goes a long way. give him the nutrients instead of juice. I waited untill 5 months for baby food. first cereal and a month later add one new food per week. fresh bananas are a good first choice. Ask your dr these questions also.

I wouldn’t start giving him juice yet unless he is having trouble with using the restroom, if he is acting hungry I would go ahead and start feeding him stage 1 fruits and vegetable mixed with rice cereal!!!

I wouldn’t start them on juice yet, since there is so much sugar in it. It’s great when they are having trouble going to the bathroom but otherwise I suggest you wait. I would feel them cereal in the morning and then a cereal bottle before bed. If you are going to start on food, get them use to the veggies, if not it will be hard to get them to eat anything else. They love the fruit. Wait it out though if you can… stick to the cereal for now.

your actually not suppose to give them rice cereal until they are 6 month’s cause thier stomach can’t handle it yet. but if they doc advise to give it to him now then go a head. you are not suppose to start giving him solid food’s until about 6-7 month’s old. but if you start giving him food you alway’s start them off on veggies never fruit cause if you give fruit first then they won’t eat nothing else but fruit and that’s not good. and they say you are not suppose to give him juice’s either yet. that is use more for the bathroom problem’s when they are young. if they have to much of it it’s not good for thier little tummy’s. but if you want to give him juice go ahead he is your son. but if you give him juice make sure you do half juice and half water.

I started my son on some baby food fruit for beginners at 3.5 months old. He was going from bottle to bottle and didn’t seem to be satisfied with the formula alone. The doctor said it was fine. I also started him on rice cereal at 4 months and I would sometimes mix a little friut in it too. He is 6 months now and eats fruit, cereal and veggies just fine. I know everyone says to start them on veggies first so that they don’t get hooked on only sweet things (fruits), but I found that when we did that with my first son, he grew to become not much of an eater and never really enjoyed food or had an interst in it. To this day, he still needs to be prompted to eat and he’s nine! The problem is, and you can read about it in “What to Expect the First Year”, that normally at 3 months, the tongue reflex is still there. The baby pushes out foreign objects like spoons or solids with his tongue. I found that the sweetness of the fruit helped with that because he really liked the taste. As I said, he is 6 months now and I tried him on juice this week and he hates it, so I guess I haven’t turned him into a sugar junkie! You don’t want him replacing his bottle feeding with a juice feeding, so I’d try the fruit first. Good luck!

Well, when my baby was 4 months the doctor told me to start giving him baby food…i think you should try giving him some baby food…starting with vegetables…and i don’t think juice is gonna harm your baby….but…the best thing to do is talk to your baby’s doctor.

yes aternative for milk is juice,or water, you can boil some rice with a lot of water—1/2 cup of rice with 1liter of water, when the rice become soft you can take the water which look like milk you can add some powder milk if the baby don’t like it this is better than giving himsolid at a very early time

(1)In truth, solid foods are not nutritionally necessary until a baby is six months old, and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for approximately the first six months of your child’s life. In some cases, there is nothing wrong with introducing your infant to baby food between four and six months of age with your pediatrician’s consent. If, however, you or any of baby’s siblings have allergies, it is extremely important that you hold off for at least six months and then follow any special precautions from your doctor, as your baby may be at high risk for allergies.

However, your doctor told you to start giving him rice cereal already because of his weight, so try mixing some of the cereal with either some fruits or vegs..If you give him juice go for the baby juices not juicy juice (way too much sugar!) and you can mix some cereal with juice as well you don’t have to use milk all the time….plus it is ok to just give him water too, cause no matter how old or young a person is they need water…Even though some doctors will tell you not to give babies water until they are 6mos old other will tell you that you can start giving them water right after they are born…Your the mommy not your in-laws not trying to be mean or anything but you know what your baby is ready for if he is showing the signs of wantting baby food then go for it just watch for a few days after you give him something new to make sure he don’t have any allergies to what you give him…

I always start my children with a little rice cereal first. Then after a week I add a little fruit puree either apple or pear. Usually of a morning about two hours after their first bottle in the morning. Then about a month later I start to introduce the veges of an afternoon.

This is totally a call for you and your doctor to make. I can give you a copy of the “Feeding and Nutrition Guide”, and you can make your own decisions from there. Click here for the link to the guide on my website
