My basset hound is 4 years old and is 20 lbs overweight?

Every time I put him on a diet, he eats stupid stuff like socks and dish towels. He even ate canola oil. But if I keep him on the same diet I have been he will end up having back problems because he is so long. Help!

Keep all of that stuff out of reach when you give him a diet but don’t starve him.

put him on a diet and walk him more and clean ur house and dog proof it so he cant get to all the things he eats

When y ou cut down on his food – add canned green beans – that will provide bulk so he will ‘feel’ full – but cut down on calories.

Put him on Little Giants dog food. You can only order it off line so you will have to look it up. 1) It helps them be a healthy weight 2) It is great for you dog, no bi products that are in most dog foods that not only are unhealthy but has been proven to shorten the life span of your pet

It doesnt depend on the age, it depends on the length and height of the pup.
If you are feeding a dog, adult dog food, in the proper rations, you dont need to worry about a diet. You also just need to make sure you play and have him run enough to burn off the extra fat that is in dog food for energy.

You just need to portion the food right. Give him 2/5 of his food ration for the day in the morning, 1/5 at noon, and 2/5 at dinner.
For example a 70 lb male, moderately active breed, should have about 3-5 cups of food.

A 50 lb male should have 2-4. If your dog is overweight, I would suggests doing 1 and 1/2 c in the morning, 1/2 c at noon, and 1 and 1/2 cup at night.
That way he has food through out the day, it will keep him full- make sure he has lots of water.
Dont feed him table food.
Treats shouldnt be used that ofter, or use peices of his food. We say no more then 1-2 small treats a day.
Also dog proof the house so he cant get anything.
If you are absolutely set on “putting him on a diet” get a good doggie diet food recomendation fromt he vet and make sure they know what you are doing, in case he gets sick

Or as a treat at noon give him a SMALL dog portion of wet food.. its just as well as a treat- and a little healthier

talk to a canine nutritionist, they can find you the correct diet for him, so he feels full up without putting on the weight.

its easy to use guesswork when finding the correct diet for a dog but with breeds such as bassets i would consult a professional.

if you know he eats anything keep things out of his way but i shouldn’t think socks and dish towels are the reason he is fat there is nothing fattening in them

get him back on his diet and try to keep stuff out of reach my dog is also on a diet he also steals and eats anything!!!
i put alot of raw carrots on with his food and as a treat, they low in calories and help fill him up

Try keeping everything up high so he can’t get at them. Also take him for longer/ more walks. This may help with both weight and his eating socks and such problem. Sometimes dogs eat and chew on weird things b/c they are bored and frustrated.

He seriously needs to go on a diet.

I use Natural Balance Lite on my dog to keep her at a good weight.

Take away ALL rawhides, flossies, chew treats, etc. Give him green beans, pieces of apple (NO SEEDS!!!), or similar healthy treats for being good.

Exercise him MUCH MORE. 20 lbs is a HUGE amount – this didn’t happen overnight. He needs to be more active.

As far as eating things he shouldn’t be, don’t leave them out. If they aren’t there for him to munch on, he won’t munch on them. This part is not a doggie problems, it’s a people problem.

Hope this helps and that you can get your puppy healthy again! : )

I have used this diet for dogs I have fostered and it works! And it fills them up and they are not hungry.

Feed him a high quality dog kibble such as Wellness or Innova. Don’t bother with diet. Feed him a scant 1/2 cup twice a day. Add 1/2 – 3/4 cup canned pumpkin, (not pie filling) and green beans (either canned w/o salt or frozen). I vary the mix sometimes more pumpkin sometimes more beans. Snacks are baby carrots and apple slices.

Make sure he gets at least a 30 – 45 minutes walk every day.

Dog proof your house so he can’t get into the socks and towels. Good for you for caring enough to slim him down!

The lack of info is stupendous! What food are you feeding him? What’s his name?
It sounds like you’re feeding him dry or canned dog food with fillers in them which most of them are. I have found some “lo-carb” dog food at the pet store. You can usually tell it’s good for your dog if it has to be refrigerated. As the American diet went from a balance of protein and carbs to high carbs with a flash point sugar rating so too did our dog food. The reason is because it’s cheaper and the food companies make lots of money!
If you can’t afford that at least get him some real meat. Maybe your butcher down the street will give you some or maybe you can find it from some other source but you will have to get him off the cheap dog food.
This explains his eating socks and stuff too. You’re actually torturing him because he’s so use to eating high carbs that his body tells him that it’s time to eat and it doesn’t care what. He probably has high and low blood sugar spikes as well.
In short, the same thing that’s blowing the rest of us up is blowing him up like a balloon. Learn to “eat in” more and get off the vegetable oil (it’s high in protease inhibitors and that means that you can’t digest meat as well anymore and it has other things in it as well that contribute to the balloon shape) – yeah, I know, it’s supposed to be good for you but what do you want them to say? The truth. That’s a laugh. These food companies are in it for the big bucks and they don’t care what they feed you as long as you come back and spend more.
Look on the dog food cans and see how much grain is in there. Oh, that’s right it doesn’t list the amounts just the ingredients. So, it’s probably as high as the legal limits allow them.
Don’t believe me check it out for yourself. You can isolate different foods – like meat for one week and see the reaction. He won’t need to eat as much and he’ll start normalizing his weight within the first few days.
If that works then you can start to go back on the dog food but I wouldn’t rush into it. Feed him meat then canned. Isolate these things and keep a chart on what and when you feed him as well as his reaction.
Oh, and just a word of warning to all out there. If you think that the animals have stopped dieing because of the tainted food from China – you’re very much mistaken. We had one of our friends’ cats die from this very thing. It’s dangerous to feed you dogs and cats this food now – You don’t know where they get the grain and gluten from because they don’t have to list it!!!!

You’ve read it several times in here… the green bean diet works.

We use it for overweight dogs coming into our rescue. It’s slow, steady and keeps the dogs from feeling hungry.

Please get your boy slimmed down. That extra weight will kill him.

Good luck.
