Likelihood of being allergic to sunflower seeds when allergic to peanuts?

My 4 year old is allergic to peanuts. Someone said to try sunflower seed butter as a sub for peanut butter. I read online that sunflower seed allergy is rare – 30 diagnosed cases per year, but then read lots of other stuff saying to avoid it. What to do? I tried to sunflower butter today and it was pretty good. I know he’d love it. Does anyone know if there is an increased likelihood that he will have an allergy to sunflower seeds?

my boy is allergic to peanuts (severe) and he can eat sunflower seeds..he just doesnt like them lol..he can also eat pistachio nuts..I dont know why..lol..other nuts near kill him..and chick peas and sesame seeds near kill him too. They seem to go hand in hand with nut allergies :P

I know 2 people with extreme allergies to peanuts and they both stay away completely. They both believe that there is a possibility that it could be very bad, it’s probably different with everyone, but unless you are very close to a hospital or have an epi-pen handy I wouldn’t take the chance

check where the sunflower seeds are being processed. Sometimes some labels will say processed along with nuts. If this is the case then he/she will have an allergic reaction.

More than likely not at all.
There are sunflower butters that people use as an alternative to peanut butter for their children who are allergic to peanuts.
If you want to test your child, the best way is at the doctors office.
Take some sunflowers with you to your next appointment and let them eat them there. If anything were to happen you are in the safest place, but more than likely it will be fine for you to use.

Probably not, as peanuts and sunflowers come from completely different plant families. However, since he’s allergic to peanuts, he’s slightly more likely to be allergic to other related plant products – legumes (peanuts, beans, peas, etc) in this case.

Just to put my experience in from today – My son, now 5, is highly allergic to peanuts and nuts, dairy, eggs. We tried sunflower butter today for the first time. Within 5 minutes of eating it, he said his stomach hurt and starting grabbing his throat. He didn’t have breathing problems, but was very nauseous for 15 minutes until he vomitted and frequently grabbed his throat. He had a few small hives on his chin, and his lips were alittle swollen and red. We gave him benedryl and he is now sleeping. This was scary and wished we hadn’t tried it – but glad we know and didn’t just send him to school with it. If you are going to try it, do it in the morning or mid day, and when you will be with your child for awhile. Have Benedryl and your Epi pen handy.

i am a teacher in a daycare with children that have peanut allergies. I have been told NOT to use sunflower seeds in my birdfeeders as most areprocessed in a plant with peanuts. does anyone know of birdseed that can be purchased that is NOT processed in a plant using peanuts?
