Lemon pepper: Can I substitute this?
I recently had a recipe that called for two tablespoons of lemon pepper. At the time, I had never heard of it, and went ahead with the recipe using black pepper instead. I read online where lemon pepper is made by infusing cracked black peppercorns with lemon zest. I know it’s not the same, but if I have a recipe that calls for lemon pepper, and I don’t have any, can I substitute black pepper and lemon juice? If so, how much? For instance, the recipe I referred to earlier called for two tablespoons of lemon pepper. If I can substitute this, how much ground black pepper, and how much lemon juice? And yes, I ground my own pepper. No store-bought sawdust for me. Thank you.
BTW – To those who are saying fresh is better, or telling me to buy a lemon… I live in Florida and have a lemon tree in my backyard (and a few orange trees too). Doesn’t get much fresher than that.

yes it will taste 100 times better!!! fresh is always better!
it depends on what it is….if its lemon chicken just squeeze a whole lemon over it and grind some pepper and salt over it. and zest that lemon!!! theres so much flavor in the zest (don’t get any of the white part though)
2 tablespoons for a dip or something like that i would do 1 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice for 2 tablespoons pepper, or just to make it easy, half a lemon.
recipes are so over rated its always so much better if you just wing it on your own, and use the recipe as a guideline.
just buy lemon pepper. it’s really good on a lot of things. Especially good in Bloody Mary’s.
Yes I believe u can…. Becus its more natural…so its going to cum out better
There is nothing like fresh ground pepper. That’s all I use too.
I think it’s okay to substitute. However, I believe that regular black pepper is spicier than lemon pepper so instead of 2 tablespoons of lemon pepper, I would do 1 tablespoon of black pepper and 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Then you can adjust by taste. Have fun with it, I’m sure it will turn up good.

Good luck!
Make 2 tablespoons of ground black pepper (my preference too) and just a few drops of lemon juice (no more than a teaspoon). It would taste better if you just bought a lemon, and squeezed some fresh juice.
If you have fresh lemons you have lemon zest. Take a box grater and gently remove the bright yellow outer skin of the lemon with it. You can also carefully peel it with a vegetable peeler but just don’t get the white pith that’s under the outer skin as it’s really bitter.
Then cut the peeled skin up finely with a knife and mix it with the pepper. You’ll have more intense lemon flavour with the zest and you’ll better simulate the store bought lemon pepper with it.
Keep in mind though that most store bought lemon pepper mixes also have some salt in them so you’ll want to salt to taste.
