Lavender is a perennial which means it comes back every year. I’ve planted Lavender from seed and had no success. My package said to plant seeds in the Fall. I did and they never came up. This gives you good basic information about growing Lavender. I think sunshine is key element.

Good luck.

Purr-Cee is correct. They are almost impossible to start, successfully, from seed. Get the plants.

There are some really good lavender farms in the USA that have usefull tips around growing lavender and how to use it in various ways.

One that I like is

They are the first commerical lavender farm in Michigan and I have used their products.

Your challenge in growing lavender will depend on soil (needs a lot of drainage like sand), sunlight (lavender likes a lot of direct sun) and watering (lavender does not like its feet wet, but does need a fair amount of water during the first two to three years).

As for the different types, start with wikipedia as they have good pictures of the different types. It is very difficult to tell the difference between young plants and you may need to wait until they start blooming.

Yes, lavender is very relaxing and fun to grow.

Lavender seed must be put in freezer for 24 hours before sowing. In nature seeds are dropped in fall and go thru freeze in winter. Do not cover with soil when planting. Light sandy soil, not too rich. Good luck.
