Ive managed to get my budgie to perch on my finger?
by using millet as a reward. I tell him to ‘step up’ and he perches on to eat the millet. Then i put him back over a perch, and say ‘step down’, which he also does.
How long before I will be able to do this without offering a reward, or will I always have to?

probaly up to 2 weeks to a month
He’s learned to do it, so slowly wean him off the reward, over a matter of weeks, until he steps up and down without it. Same as you would when teaching a puppy to sit.
Or, as an alternative, try giving him a sunflower seed, instead of the millet, and then work your way from the seed to nothing.
