Is this a good vegiterian diet for a dog?
My dog is a slightly overweight chow/ lab mix. he is nine years old, and has no illnesses.other than extra weight, he is very healthy.
what i want to know is do chow chows thrive on an ovo-lacto vegiterian diet. my dog takes more from the chow side of his family, and chows have historically been fed a mostly vegitarian diet, by the chinese. but then, what about labradors? being part lab, is this recipie one he can thrive on?
1boiled egg with shell
yogurt( how much should i give him?)
1cup brown/ wild rice
1/2 cup chick peas
1cup of vegtables( carrots, spiniach, tomato, ect.)
seameal supplement
1tbs honey every few days
herbs
safflower oil (How much?)

um I hate to break it to ya but dogs are not vegitarians! They eat meat.. They need meat. They are not humans and just because you are does not mean that your dog should be. He is not going to like your vegitarian meals. They pefer meat over salad greens. You are robbing him of vitiamins. duh!!
Dogs by nature are not vegetarians. Check with your vet before going vegetarian. I would keep the dog on the same diet but gradually replace the old food with one of the newer dog foods that is formulated for overweight dogs, do this over the course of 1 week. Increase the dogs exercise. If you feed the dog treats be sure to deduct the amount of food equal to the treats given.
dogs need meat. like humans do.
omg omg omg omg. do NOT try to make your poor dog eat vegetarian food. you know…. they are CANINES. they have CANINE teeth for a REASON. what makes you think he wants vegetarian food? they eat poop for gods sake. they throw up and eat it. i dont think you should worry about it. my dog runs outside and catches and eats bunnies and squirrels and possums and shes healthier than any dog ive ever seen! You are truly stupid if you are going to put your naturally meat eating dog on a vegetarian diet.
There is compounding evidence that diet related illnesses are caused by organisms deferring from the diet of their ancestors, which in your dogs case would be FLESH, definitely check with your vet before doing anything this drastic. and definitely if you’re a vegetarian don’t impose that on your pet, however i do believe probiotics, honey and natural good EFA’s would be a welcome addition. My dog lived 18 years and besides can pet food we practices pro-nourishment with caloric restriction and used EFA’s whilst varying his diet along with regular check ups at the vet.
Dogs are not meant to be vegetarian. Humans can survive it; dogs cannot. Neither can thrive.
it’s possible to keep your dog on a veg diet, but i wouldn’t recommend things like yogurt and other milk products. dogs are lactose intolerant and giving them too many milk products can cause kidney failure. try talking to your vet….then can recommend a good blend of nutrients to keep your dog healthy and vegetarian. most of the people on this area of Y!A are used to being expert planners for their own veg diets, but animals have different needs and i would suggest you consult a professional for that.
Sophia B is talking nonsense. Humans CAN and DO thrive on a vegetarian diet.
I’m not sure if its healthy for dogs though. ;/
[edit] ignore Cajal. We have established that he/she/it is gone in the head.
That is animal cruelty!
Where are you getting this recipe from, it does not sound nutritionally complete. Dogs are lactose intolerant and should not be consuming dairy(so that is a red flag that the diet is not quite right).
Dogs can be on a vegetarian diet, since they are omnivores, but it must be carefully planned and maintained. Like people they have certain dietary requirement that must be met. You need to be sure he is eating enough food as well as the proper amounts and variety.
This is something that you need to research fully and speak to a veterinarian about before starting this diet. There seems to be a few websites to check out. If you are choosing to put together your own vegetarian dog food(and not buy the commercially made ones), always run the recipe by the vet first and get the ok.
i have had my dog for 8 years that i feed Nature’s Recipe vegetarian dog food and he never had any problems at all, and the vet is fine with his diet. here is the link to the petsmart site with veggie dog food.
