I like it, but I’d add some meat.

Not sure if it’s a good recipe, but if you’re looking for vegetarian dog food, there are commercial ones already balanced to AAFCO guidelines.

I wouldn’t personally feed my dogs a vegetarian or vegan diet, but apparently it works. Bonsylar said that dogs raised on a vegetarian diet don’t “live as long”, but she is dead wrong. Currently the world’s oldest dog is 27 human years old and vegan.

Damsel – if your other stats are true about the other two long-living dogs eating no kibble, then the real argument wouldn’t be about vegetarian vs meat, it would be about regular food vs. kibble. I would say over 90% of dog owners feed their dogs kibble, and nobody criticizes them as people criticize people who feed their dogs vegetarian meals..

What medical condition does the dog have that it has to eat a vegeterian diet????

You’re recipie looks to be lacking in protein.

ETA: For that much veggie matter you’d need 3 eggs each day, Personally I’m not thrilled with the idea of feeding that much egg – If you feed it whole that’s a LOT of cholesterol. If you don’t feed the yolk you risk biotin deficiency.

Edit: To the person below me: The egg shells are the only good source of calcium in this diet plan. By excluding them the OP makes this diet even more unbalanced. Note to the OP: Make sure you grind the egg shell into a fine powder 0 otherwise the large pieces of shell will pass through your dog’s system and he won’t absorb the minerals from it.

ETA: I just looked up Solid Gold Sea Meal online – I can’t fidn an extensive Ingredient list but it looks to have a lot of kelp in it. I would be very wary of it – too much iodine. Please check the labels or call the company to find out the iodine content.

To the Person above me: Mind you that The orignal record holder for longest lived dog was 29 and another recently deceased (28) animal bo0th lived on raw kangaroo and emu meat. Never had dog food in their life, I believe one of them also had a pint of beer each day as well. I don’t think we should count these statistical anomalies.

I’m not so big on “vegetarian” diets for dogs. They need meat in their systems- they are omnivores and thats depriving them of an essential nutrient. Its fine for humans to be vegetarians- but thats their own choice, I don’t think its fair for you to make this decision for your dog, who in all likelihood would prefer the meat.

This diet is seriously lacking, especially in proteins. I would talk to a vet about choosing a homemade diet for your dog anyways, instead of random people on the internet.

Dogs are carnivores. They NEED meat.

That isn’t criticism. It’s fact.

They can live on a vegetarian diet, they just won’t be as healthy, or live as long.

Dog diets should be meat based. Vegetables and beans are good for them, they just can’t live on them. Their bodies don’t process beans and rice as protein to the extent humans do. This dog is not getting enough protein.

OK, I got to repeat what everyone else has asked, “where’s the meat?” why is your dog eating vegeterian…?
What you are planning to feed is almost a total herbavore diet…and that just isn’t going to work for you dog for a long period of time. I don’t know a medical reason why you would use this diet. Again.. there is nothing here..besides the egg and shell that will feed your dog. The rest of the list… are items that are going to go quickly thru your dog…giving him little in the way of nutrients or vitamines or minerals.

Dogs are carnivores…and as such.. their bodies need the proteins in the meat to survive. Basically dogs thrive when they consume diets that are structured as Mother Nature intended:rich in animal protein and fat.
People believe that dogs “need” vegetables… because that is what the dog food companies want you to believe. Vegetables are cheaper than meat…therefore.. they can make dog food cheaper. This has been going on for so long… fancy labels with veggies on the front… commercials with tantalizing veggies to enitice US the owners… to buy. Dog food companies have convinced us to feed our dogs an omnivore diet.
The dogs don’t need the veggies..they need meat.
Sure your dog can survive on the omnivore diet… but it doesn’t thrive. Just look at a dogs mouth.. nature gave it teeth to grip, and tear and crunch bones… it does not have teeth like humans, horses or cows to chew.
Also, their saliva does not produce the enzymes or the carry the bacteria needed to start the break-down of carbohydrates and starches (rice, wheat).
Also.. a dog’s colon is very short… making food pass through very quickly…vegetables need more time to ferment and break down.. with the shorter colon the veggies basically just slip on through…

So again…dog food companies put just enough meat in the product to keep your dog alive and lots of veggies to fill the can.
I stress again..dogs are carnivores…and thrive on that type of diet..they will live on a omnivore diet… but will NOT on a herbavore diet…and that is what you have listed.
If you are a vegetarian..good for you…so am I. But that is my choice… I have a freezer full of meat for my dogs… that’s their life.

PS: dogs do not have Cholesterol problems… there bodies are amazing in the fact that they do not create bad cholesterol. No heart attacks for them.. unless they are obese or ill. So animal fat or eggs will not affect them adversly.
Again.. I reiterate… they are CARNIVORES!!
The dogs on our familie’s farm all ate meat…only meat…and all lived 20+ years.
