Is corn meal the same thing as corn flour?

I was planning on making corn tortillas which are just corn flour and water, but I realized all I have is corn meal. Is that the same thing? Could I use that to make my tortillas?

Actually, tortillas are not from corn flour, but rather corn meal.

Corn flour is more highly ground than corn meal.

Additionally, if you are making tortillas, you must have corn meal from corn (actually hominy corn) which has been soaked in a lye solution (nixtmal). Otherwise, it won’t be tortillas.

Masa harina (the instant variety of masa found in supermarkets) is just a powdered form of nixtmalized cornmeal.

Corn meal is used for corn bread in conjunction with flour. No, it is not the same thing.

nope, you can make other things from corn meal but tortillas need the finer texture of flour. You need masa harina.

I see no one is really answering your question, so I will give it a try.

Corn meal and corn flour are both made from corn kernels. Corn flour has a finer grind than corn meal.

Since you only have corn meal, put the proper volume in a blender until you get the consistency of flour. You will have made your own corn flour out of your corn meal. Double check your measurements. You can always grind more.

You can do this same kind of thing if a recipe calls for powdered sugar and you only have table sugar on hand. Just put your sugar in a blender and let her rip. (It’s cheaper, too.)

Corn meal is ground more coarsely than corn flour. However you’re ok, because corn meal is what’s used to make tortillas. Pat pat pat away!!

Corn meal is more grainy and won’t do it. Get some corn flour to make the torts
