Infant w/ rectal bleeding, vomiting and VERY fussy! ?

My son is 3 months old and has had rectal bleeding for over 2 months now and vomits a lot! His ped. referred him to a Ped. Gasternologist. The ped gastor. says he believes he is highly allergic to milk protiens. He had his formula switched a total of 6 times and is now on Neocate. As well as Beechnut cereal with every feeding, the Ped. Gastern. told me to stick 2 tsp in for every ounce, however I felt that was way to much cereal, for a 3 month old to be on. He is also on 3 acid reflux medications as well. The bleeding and vomiting subsided for about a week, but now it is all back again and now he is EXEREMLY fussy! I cant seem to do anything to calm him down. He falls asleep crying and wakes up crying! He has had a rough start at life, he was a NICU baby, need to be on a ventalor, cpap, nose cannale, feeding tube, had pnumonia 2x’s well in the nicu and had bronctics approx 2 wks ago. He had lung diease as well when he was born and was not able to keep his own oxygen level, they did blood gasses on him several times a day when he was in the nicu, he had yellow jaundice & had to have phototherapy as well when in the nicu. He also need a blood trasfusion when he was a week old, he had surgery for Pyloric stenonis when he was a month old. Nothing seems to be getting better for him. The doctors will try something new with him and the sythpoms subside for a week or two and are right back again. I dont know what else to do or what other doctors to have him checked by! No doctor has done blood work or any test on him. I am getting fed up with the docs. I hate seeing my baby in pain. And feel helpless when I cant do anything to make him better! I thought he may have Necrotizing Enterocolitis but I would have thought they would have tested him for that in the nicu. He has just about every sythpom of it except the budgling stomach. I mentioned it to the gastren. doc and he didnt want to hear anything about it! He is thinking it is the milk allergy as well as acid reflux, well if it is that why isnt the medication working and why is he still having all the samethings still going on! Why do they go away for a few days when they try something new for him then come back. I feel like they are using him as a guiene pig. I dont know where else to turn! PLease help me! And him!!!
i am going for a second opion but cant get in til feb. 2nd! I never heard of relacting, if its possible i try it! how do u go about doing it? I will do anything to make things better for my little guy. the doc said the cereal will make it thicker and hopefully will help it stay down
Tried Allimentuim and he had the same reaction as he is now when he was on it! I could try the milk thing at the hospital like you said. I was thinking maybe something to do with the blood transfusion, since I have no idea what or who it came from. The had to use a match and said they had to do it right away, and unfortnualy were at the hospital when it was found that he needed it, we were getting our other 2 children at a family members so we could get to the hospital with him, but the blood transfusion was done before we able to get there!

Did the doctor give a reason as to why you should be giving him cereal?

Try cutting that out of his diet.

I find it very odd that a doctor would recommend giving solids to a baby with such obvious digestive issues. Seems counter productive to me.

…any chance of you re-lactating and possibly breastfeeding? Breastmilk would be much easier on his tummy (provided you kept dairy out of your diet to prevent any milk proteins from passing to him).

You are allowed to have a second opinion and that is exactly what i would do.

You need to get a second opinion. Do you have a Children’s Hospital in or close to where you live? I can understand your anxiety. Please find another doctor…..someone should have an answer for you. Don’t give up.
God bless you and your little one.

As for the person who gave you that horrible answer….they don’t have a clue! Ignore them, they should not be allow to answer on this site!

Although our situation wasn’t as advanced as yours, I feel your pain.

My daughter had horrible colic and screamed for hours at night around bedtime. She would have projectile vomiting and her poops turned from yellow (normal breastfed stools) to brown, to green. Then it would be mostly jelly-like blood in her stool, which really alarmed me. I took her to the peds, who suggested stopping nursing for three days and putting her on formula.

Like you I had done a lot of research and knew this was crap. Unless I changed my diet, how on earth was she going to get better after the three days? Plus the majority of baby formulas (although it doesn’t look like Neocate does) contain milk proteins! We ended up switching doctors after that fiasco. So if you suspect something more seriously going on with your child, go with your gut instinct and dump your doctor. Especially after it’s been going on for so long.

you might want to watch for other allergens such as beef, soy and wheat, since it sounds like he’s so sensitive. I don’t know what the symptoms of necrotizing enterocolitis are, but if you think he fits this description, seek out another opinion and tell them your thoughts. Two months of this is too long for this little guy to be hurting so long, and has to be torture on you, too. I hope he feels better soon!

Uhhh… if i were you i would take him to the nearest emergency room because that baby might have rotovirus. believe you me, all the symptoms match and you don’t want to let it get to severe. TRUST ME!

Have you ever seen the show mystery diagnosis on TLC? They always feature rare or hard to diagnose illnesses. Every time the parents go to doctor After doctor until finally they get one that finds what it is. Often the 1st few doctors incorrectly diagnose the problem. I would get 2nd, 3rd, and 4th opinions from ped. as well as gastern. Go to the head of the hospital and tell them you want the best doctor they have. I would also look into a nearby medical schools. Talk to some of the professors or researchers there. You could also look up famous gastern. and see if you could get in to see them or if they would look at his case. I would contact any and everyone who might be able to help. You can’t have too many opinions or help because eventually one will be right. You might get some slack from your doc. but this is your baby and you don’t know what it is. This could be life threatening or genetic. Good luck and I’ll say a little prayer for you and the baby.

I’d have to agree with the first answerer. Cereal for a 3-month-old? I’ve heard that’s the equivalent of feeding an adult cement pancakes. No wonder he’s fussy. I’d definitely look into re-lactating. Sometimes women are able to re-stimulate their milk with a breastpump. In the meantime have you considered the milk bank at your hospital? It sounds like you’ve considered just about every avenue so it’s worth a shot. Call your local La Leche League. It can’t hurt and I’ve heard that these women are very resourceful and can at least give you some good advice. If you could somehow get him on breastmilk either yours or someone else’s that may be your best bet. If not, I’ve also heard that Alimentum is pretty easy on baby’s stomach. I’m so sorry to hear that you’re having such a hard time. This all must be exhausting and nerve-wracking to say the least. Good luck.
