I have to cut down a very large black walnut tree. I know the wood is valuable. Does anyone know how to go about selling the wood?

Contact your local lumbermill and ask them if they take wood like that.
For fire wood – put an ad in the paper
For lumber – let someone else cut it down The trunk must be somewhat in tact to be milled.
Try contacting any local cabinet makers. I’ll bet they’d love the stuff! Try calling a local lumber yard to see if they have any recommendations, too. You can also try listing it on ebay as a local pick up item or any similar site, like Craigslist, if you have access.
I would call a lumber dealer. Look in your phone book for “hardwoods”.
You also need to take care when cutting it. You don’t wish to damage the wood in the process. You’ll need to make sure that there are no nails in the tree (though most lumber yards use a metal detector, nails make the cutting more difficult).
The price you will get for the wood depends on the quality, length, number of board feet, who transports it and that sort of thing.
Again, call a lumber yard or hardwood dealer.
if you cut it down, the mill won’t want it.
if it is an accessible area, they might not want it, due to the possibility of nails that would ruin a saw blade.
find a lumber mill before you even touch it with a chain saw.
call a lumber buyer and let them cut it. if the tree is in a yard it may have nails in it and be unusable because of the thousands of dollars of damage it can do to a sawmill. run a metal detector over it on all sides once it is on the ground….roll it over of course.
Put a free ad on Craigslist…
note that the first links are from a County Extension Office…. that’s the place to call first, as they most likely know where the sawmills or buyers are….
suggest you wait to cut it down… some buyers prefer to do their own cutting to ‘do it right’…..
