I want to learn to cook better – where do I start?

I can cook but I alwaysend up using the same ingredients I’m used to and cooking the same things.

I think you need to get a recipe book and then do some of the things in there because then you can have many different recipes in there and different ingredients!

Have you ever thought of taking a class? Sur la table offers monthly classes in the community where I live. I have often thought of taking one myself. In any event, start by researching different recipes of the different foods you like. For example if you like chicken, research different ways to prepare. From roast chicken to grilled chicken, etc. I also watch cooking shows and when I see a recipe I want to try (they do make it look easy) I go to the website from the show and print the recipe. Practice makes perfect!! Good Luck.

I was a Chef for years and when I was stuck (often) ,,,, I would go to Chapters and pull many different good cook books off the shelf; and kind of use Chapters as a library. Give it a try, I would always find new dishes to create!

Start at a good book store, reading through cook books, looking for something that catches your eye. either buy a regional cook book, or check one out of your local library, or save the food sections of your newspaper. Subscribe to Cooks Illustrated Magazine.

Let your imagination reign. Take a list of your favorite foods that you do cook. Then add some flavors that you think may enhance it in some way. You have to experiment. To me that is fun. Now present your dish to your family and friends and asked them to give you their absolute honest opinion. Tweak your recipes from their and your reviews. You will be amazed. And try new recipes that you and your family loves. Follow the recipes to a tee and tweak after you have served it. You can’t go wrong. I will tell you one valuable lesson I have learned. Never put spinach in soup!.

I think you shoud know how to make fire..haha!~

What I do is keep recipes that seem interesting from websites (foodnetwork.com, allrecipes.com) magazines (Bon Apetit, Gourmet, Chatelaine, Canadian Living) and cookbooks (the library is a good place to get some to look at without spending a ton of money). I have folders for all the recipes (one for main dishes, one for sides, etc). Once a week I try to pick a new recipe to try. Any recipe I like goes into my main recipe folder, any recipe I don’t like goes in the garbage.

You can look up recipes almost anywhere. If you want to try and make something, make a list of those ingeredients, and buy those when u go shopping. Try not to choose a recipe that looks hard, or say things that maybe you dont know how to do.
Also, if you want to get really good..look into taking a class? They’re really fun :]

Try food from other countries, e.g. sushi, you can find recipes on the internet easily, if you have trouble trying new things, make them then shut your eyes when you try it. Works for me!
I like this site-
Good luck!

try some casseroles that use different ingredients until you get used to some of the seasonings. You may not like all of them and will learn to substitute and even omit those you don’t care for. Go to Taste of Home or Southern living for a start on some great recipes. You can usually even see the pix of what the food will look like…that helps!

I could suggest a good cook book or try taking a class but those are the obvious answers……maybe figure out what it is you are looking at learning more about as cooking has really branched out over the years…..

There are alot of web sites with good idea’s and most have chat groups…..sharing idea’s is a good thing when trying new things !

I learned from my mom and by practice …my favorite web site is Taste of Home……I also subscribe to their magazine and I love the simple idea’s as I am not into fancy cooking !
