Hypoglycemic Vegetarian. help?



I have been a vegetarian for 10 years; and hypoglycemic at least that long, though I was just diagnosed last year. My problem is that I cannot seem to get a handle on my blood sugar while maintaining a vegetarian diet. My diet is extremely healthy to all appearances, yet even something like sprouted Ezekiel bread, which has a relatively low GI, sets me on a sugar craving within 10 minutes. Soy protein isolate gives me problems, as do chickpeas, which are generally considered the wonder protein source of whole foods.

I’m mostly frustrated because even adding a little bit of meat to a meal seems to satisfy me and calm the anxious feeling that I get from eating carbohydrates. Eggs help, but how many eggs, realistically, can one eat in a day?

I take in about 1300 calories a day on a vegetarian diet, including 65-80 grams of non-soy protein. If anyone has any ideas, besides passing the turkey bacon, it would be very much appreciated.
(All veggie burgers/ veggie deli meats are made with soy protein isolate or wheat gluten)

Have you tried veggie-meats? You can get these at most stores. Also, are you taking vitamins? You may be low on things like b12 which are only available in animal or synthetic sources.

If you keep on eating vegetarian food you’ll get very sick. Believe me, it happened to me. I’ve been veg for 20 years, and now in my late 40′s, diagnosed with gluten and milk intolerance, and iron deficiency beyond any possible limit. I just MUST eat meat to survive, so I see every consumed steak as a medicine.
However, if you feel compassionate with animals (I do), find a way to secure that the meat, and every animal product that you consume, has been produced in an animal-friendly way, meaning that the animals have had a good life. I buy only free-range meat and eggs. Same goes for fish. Just make your choice.
