How to prevent trout from swallowing the hook?
I’ve started trout fishing for the past 3 years and every time i catch a trout it always swallow the hook. Probably i only managed to catch 2 trout in my whole 3 years of trout fishing that has been hooked on the lip. I use #12 to #10 hooks. Is it becasue the hooks are to small? Do i need to go bigger? The trout that i catch are around 15-20 inches. Or is this normal for trout fishing?

well, depends on what lure your using, but for anything smaller than largemouths i use a #6 and it rarely gets swallowed
use bigger bait, something they have to chew, not just swallow straight away!
even i can catch trout! they like worms and big maggots!
use circle hooks.i like gamakatsu best –1-_-38-446-511-25&hvarAID=froogle&mr:trackingCode=108A6E40-0451-DD11-98CA-001422107090&mr:referralID=NA
if it swallows the hook , pull it out of the water and punch it in the face.
dont bait fish, use in-line spinners like roostertails……
its not the hook size…18 trebles are often used. its the food.
Use artificial lures. With bait, the fish will try to swallow it, and will often get hooked deep. With an artificial (spoon, spinner, or fly) the fish will know it’s a fake as soon as it bites it, but by then it’s hooked, generally in the lip or slightly inside the mouth.
when you feel it bite set the hook
Its very hard but you can get a fish extractor and pull it right out
#10 and #12 hooks are medium sized hood in fly fishing. Some flys are used in fly fishing are down to a #22 hook size. It’s more likely that the hook isn’t get set quick enough. Even a sunfish which has a small mouth can gulp whole a foam beetle pattern tied on a #12 hook.
I have a medium size hemostat attached to a lanyard on my vest that I can use to carefully retrieve a hook that isn’t hooked on the lip. I use it quite often. I haven’t had too many losses of flys or any released trout that weren’t hooked in the lip of the fish.
Below is a link for the best price I found for hemostats.

i have to agree with twice bitten. rarely will you ever see a circle hook get swallowed and another plus is that they set themselves
