They should be cracked or cut first. I think if they are left whole it will take a very long time to cook them. The steel cut oats I have take 30 minutes to cook and they are the size of a pinhead.
I use 1 cup water to 1/4 cup pinhead oats and cook for the 30 minutes.

i would not recommend it because humans do not have the bacteria/enzymes that cows and other animals have to digest it

why would I do that . . ? ?

back to my Boy Scouts and survival . . ?
I would (find 2 – 2 x 12′s 8 – 10 ft long
set them on a firm surface concrete drive or the pavement
put the oats between and run the truck over them

I don’t know there will still be chafe
It seems winnowing comes in here
tossing the flattened oats in the air to blow away the dirt and fiber ? ?

Raw Oatmeal
This recipe is an easy, healthy way to start the day, and even kids like it! Serve with raw berries, cocoa nibs, nuts or other raw dried fruits of your choice.

Note: finding raw oats can be difficult, as most are lightly steamed shortly after harvest to prevent the oats from turning rancid. To make sure your oats are raw, check with the manufacturer or seller.

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Ingredients:
3 cups raw whole oats, divided
1/2 cup finely ground raw almonds
7 cups pure water, room temperature
1/4 cup agave nectar or 3 T. maple syrup
1/4 cup chopped Medjool dates
1/2 t. sea salt
Chopped walnuts, for serving
Preparation:
1. In a blender, blend 1 1/2 cups of the oats until fine. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground oats with the remaining oats, finely ground almonds, water, agave nectar, Medjool dates and sea salt, mixing until well combined. Cover and let mixture soak overnight in the refrigerator. Before serving, add salt and agave nectar to taste and sprinkle with chopped walnuts.

Raw grains in general are not that easy to digest raw (they aren’t POISONOUS, just take a longer time to break down the complex carbohydrates into sugars that the body needs, thereby can cause some large intestine distress). One way to get around this is to SPROUT your grains and legumes, then dehydrate them and mix them into crackers that you “cook” in the dehydrator at no greater than 105 degrees, thereby maintaining the enzymes and the “live” quality of the food without the gastric distress. If you are able to find raw whole oat grains,
