How much water do I use for lentil soup in slow cooker?

I am going to make lentil soup in my slow cooker, but I have never done this before. Since I will be at work while it is cooking I cannot watch it to make sure it does not need more water. So please someone tell me if I have a pound of dried brown lentils how much water do I add?

Also how many servings does a whole pound make if I keep other ingredients light?

Directions:

Can I come over and have some soup?

You should use about 3 or 4 cups of water (or even better, chicken stock) per cup of lentils. A pound of lentils should yield about ten servings.
