How much chocolate do I need to buy for a chocolate fountain?
I borrowed it from a friend for a birthday party. There will be about 75 kids there, ages 12-14. How much chocolate do I need to keep it flowing for a 3-4 hour party? Also, what kind of chocolate should I buy? The instructions say that Belgain chocolate is the best but I live in a very rural area and can’t find it out here. Milk chocolate or semi-sweet, maybe?

Like maybe 10 gallons?
buy the chocolate fountain first then read the direction on how much chocolate to out in the fountain
Ask Charlie!
I’m not sure how much but I would suggest a mix of semi sweet and milk.
Here is some info from the web:
4. How Many People Will The Chocolate Fountain Serve?
Answer: Our package, which includes 25 pounds of chocolate, along with your accompaniments is normally adequate for events up to 400 guests. However, keep in mind that the Chocolate Fountain will serve an unlimited number of people by adding additional chocolate.
here you have a page with faq about fountains that may help you
it should tell you on the directions (usually 2Pd’s.)
Don’t know about quantity you need but I do know you need to make sure the fountain is extremely stable and won’t get bumped. We had one where the middle piece got a little off center and that baby was flinging chocolate all over the place. Funny but a mess to clean up, the chocolate dries real fast!
I recommend you buy girardhelli chocolate chips. The chocolate is good quality, but cheap enough to prepare a lot and it’s easy to find because almost all grocery stores carry it (even Super Wal Mart). Read the instructions on the fountain to find out how much you need. I would mix semi-sweet with milk chocolate, if you can.
Also: If you’ve never served out of one of these things, they are terribly messy. You need to be sure and put it in an area that can get melted chocolate all over it (outside would be a good idea), and anticipate wiping it up around it a couple of times during the party. You will have chocolate on the floor, on the table, and all over anything you put in the path of where people are dipping and bringing the item back to their plate.
Have plenty of skewers where people can see them to use, but don’t put them in the path of where they will get chocolate dripped all over them. It will be the hit of the party, I guarantee it!
p.s. Buy a box of rice krispy treats (Little Debbie brand are a good value) and cut them into little cubes. This is the best thing in the world to dip in the chocolate.
For 75 kids in that age group, I think you’ll need around 6Kg to 8Kg.
Kids would love milk chocolates. Adults are more into dark chocolates. You can opt for white chocolates and use food colouring to match your party deco / theme; eg. green or yellow chocolates. You can also mix milk choc with dark choc, 1:1
If you are using a home chocolate fountain and not of the commercial type, try not to let it run for more than 3 hours if possible. It’s not meant for heavy duty use.
To make perfect fountains, you must use good grade chocolates with 33% cocoa contents or more. They call it coverture chocolates. Do NOT use the normal chocolate bars people use for making cakes or fancy shaped chocolate candies.
Adding oil / butter to such lower grade chocolates will not help. If you are unsure, buy some chocolates to try first. You wouldn’t want to try it only during the party itself. (You probably could pour the melted choc into a big bowl for dipping if fountain fails you – but you’ll end up being disappointed)
Best chocolates don’t have to be belgium alone. Belgium chocs are famous, no doubt. You can buy indonesian or singaporean. It tastes just as thick & chocolatey – just make sure they contain more than 33% cocoa. Coverture chocs, that is.
My Advice for your party:
DON’T let water get into your choc fountain. Have an attendant to manage your fountain at all times. It can get pretty messy and tedious to clean up when accidents happen, eg. spills, etc. Make sure dippers are dry. If using cakes, better to use a laddle to pour choc over the cake on a plate than to dip it.
Good luck & have fun.
