How long do you cook chicken for shredded chicken sandwiches ?



i’m using fresh chicken for shredded chicken sandwiches and i was wondering what’s the best way to cook it ? in the crock-pot with salt and water ? and how long should i cook it ?

Quick way: Heat up a sodium chicken broth with carrots, onion, celery, peppercorns, one bay leaf and bring to a boil on high heat. Then add chicken and reduce heat to medium-low. Cook for 15 minutes or until juices run clear.

***Zesty Slow Cooker Chicken BBQ***

6 frozen skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
1 (12 ounce) bottle barbeque sauce
1/2 cup Italian salad dressing
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

DIRECTIONS
Place chicken in a slow cooker. In a bowl, mix the barbeque sauce, Italian salad dressing, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Pour over the chicken.
Cover, and cook 3 to 4 hours on High or 6 to 8 hours on Low. Pull apart using 2 forks, and serve on buns.

I think cooking it in a skillet (chicken breasts) or baking it (chicken pieces/cut up bone in chicken) would be fine. Just let it cool and shred. I don’t think your end results will be as good cooking it in a crock pot. If it was beef or pork I would say, “toss it in the crock pot and let it cook over night.” To be sure your chicken is done, always make sure you see no pink in the meat or your meat thermometer reads 165-170 degrees.

There are so many ways to cook chicken.

The crock pot will give you a very moist and tender filling if you have the time, but for the most flavor don’t just add salt and water.
I recommend the following:

6 chicken breasts
1 finely diced onion
1 rib celery, chopped
1 clove garlic
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. ground pepper
1/8 tsp Cayenne pepper or some red pepper flakes
1 bay leaf
a pinch of dried sage
a pinch of dried rosemary
just a few threads of saffron (optional, but good)
1/3 cup white wine
1/3 cup water

Cook all this in your crock pot on low overnight or at least 4 hours.
You can substitute dried onion, garlic, and celery seed if you need to, the chicken will taste great.
I know it seems like a lot of trouble, but you will have succulent, tender chicken that just falls apart for your sandwiches if you do this.

You can change the spices, and make all sorts of other dishes with this one basic recipe. I add a can of chipotle peppers, and use it for chicken soft tacos.

In a crockpot cook on Low for 6 to 8 hours. Use broth or water and salt and pepper, fill up about half way. Or you can add a cup of barbeque sauce to the broth for bar-b-q shredded chicken.

SHREDDED CHICKEN SANDWICHES

1 broiler fryer chicken or 4 chicken breast halves
1 (10 3/4 oz.) cans cream of celery soup, undiluted
Salt and pepper to taste
Hamburger buns

Simmer chicken for several hours in water (salted) to cover (until meat almost falls off bones – this makes it much more tender than rapid cooking). Save 1/2 cup of broth. Shred chicken and mix with soup and broth. Add pepper and more salt if needed. Heat and serve on buns.
