How is thawed breast milk supposed to taste?

I just thawed some frozen breast milk for my 2 month old baby for the first time as it I am afraid that I am not producing enough for some reason. I tasted it and it tastes a bit funny not like the breast milk when I have just expressed it. It doesn’t have any smell, but I am still wondering if somehow it has gone bad in the freezer. How is the thawed breast milk supposed to taste?

i’ve never tasted my milk so i can’t help you there but i do know that breast milk can be stored in your freezer for up to 3 months and even longer if in a deep freezer. i was freezing milk for when my daughter began day care and i began 3 months before she started.

how are you storing the milk? i bought breast milk storage bags. you can get them from any pharmacy. also, when thawing, i place the bag in warm water or let it sit out and thaw on its own.

Should taste sweet. I always taste the milk before I give it to him and it should taste sweet. It will taste a little different thawed then it does when it is fresh, which makes me wonder if it is getting damaged at all but it should be fine as long as it tastes sweet. If it tastes gross, its probably bad.

First off, you probably have enough milk. Just put baby to the breast when she asks. You can give both sides and then back again if that’s what it takes to satisfy her (often it’s necessary to switch back and forth during growth spurts, for example, when babies need more milk).

To find out if your frozen milk is fine, read here:

Note that you swirl milk when it’s thawed or after it has sit for awhile. Don’t shake it.

It has separated during freezing that is why it tastes different.
Warm it in a bottle or freezer baggie under warm tap water & then shake it,
After that it should be close to fresh.

The constituents of breast milk alter its physico-chemical properties and hence the organoleptic properties (color, taste) change when you freeze and thaw it. Frozen and thawed breast milk will never taste like fresh one because of the changes it undergoes during freezing and thawing. It is determined by the initial microbial quality of fresh breast milk, microbial load of the container used for storing the milk and the rapidity of freezing.
Apart from the enzyme lipase released by the psychrotrophic microorganisms, innate lipolytic enzymes do play a role in lipolytic activity which deteriorates the quality of frozen breast milk.
