How do you prevent flatulence while in a vegan diet?
Have been eating a dairy-egg-meat free diet for the last three weeks. While I have no problem with beans, other yummy foods like kale, quinoa, onions, eggplant among others have caused both me and my family a lot of constant flatulence. (I cooked everything).
Suggestions? Probiotics?
The processed foods I am eating include Silk, baked tofu, Boca ckn patties (not often -too expensive), Morning Star crumbles, some soy cheese, yeast flakes?…. But I love to cook so I;ve made eggless carrot bread (yum!), zucchini bread, lovely creamy sauces with blended couliflower and vegi-mayo… this is a great way of eating!
Oh and we are not in pain, it’s just embarrasing in public. I wil ltry your suggestions.

This is a recipe posted on vegweb, and it usually works for me.
1/8 tsp powdered sage, mint, or thyme
1/8 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp lemon juice
mix the three ingredients in a small glass and add a little bit of water. Drink it right before you eat.
It tastes terrible, so I usually have to chase it with a full glass of water, but it really does a good job of cutting down on the gas.
Make sure to eat some of your vegetables raw. Raw fibrous vegetables (especially carrots, celery and cauliflower) pass through your system incredibly quickly, improving your digestion and eliminating problem gas.
Take beano before, or if you don’t want to take an anti gas medication, your body may just need to adjust to the veggies.
fart away……. as long as it is not smelly.
Why stop a biological function ?
yes, I know what you mean. I do to my heart’s content no problem there….I am on veg. diet.
While everyone has gas on a regular basis (it’s healthy), gas to the point of being painful or otherwise inconvenient (e.g. not being able to control it in public) can be eased by gradually adding the high fiber foods that cause it in your diet.
If you haven’t been eating kale, quinoa, onions, etc. and just started 3 weeks ago, your body is going to take some time to adjust.
Consider adding 1 of the high fiber foods to your diet daily, versus eating several servings every day and slowly increase your intake. Also watch portion size. While these foods are certainly good for you and it’s better to stuff yourself with kale than cookies, eating too much at a time will also increase gas and bloating.
There are numerous anti-gas products on the market, but not all of vegan friendly because of animal derivatives such as gel capsules, etc. Bean-zyme is a vegan alternative to Beano and is available in natural foods stores and veganstore.com as well as amazon.com. But I’d check my local natural foods store, such as Whole Foods first.
haha that’s funny, just proving your diet isn’t natural
Look at your diet as a whole. While you mentioned your prime culprits, what else are you eating that day when you eat those items? A lot of processed soy foods (which you didn’t mention anything about, and may not be eating anyway) make most people very gasy (I had that problem when I first became vegan, and consequently, we don’t eat those foods anymore.) None-the-less, your body will adjust in time to eating these foods, you’re still in the “detox” stage. If it’s that bad though, I would suggest that the rest of your meals on days that you eat these foods, be lower in fiber. Quinoa is naturally high in fiber, but is HIGHLY nutritious, maybe eat smaller portions. Try making kale “chips” in the dehydrator, or in your oven on the lowest setting. As for eggplants and onions, I don’t know what to say, except to eat smaller quantities, and eat less fiber in your other meals on the days that you eat them. It will get better in time. Have you ever seen the “I’m vegan. I poop 3 times a day” bumper sticker? Most of us do (although I don’t have the flatulence problem), but it’s a good thing, you are supposed to “go” that much. Try adding cumin to these items when you cook them. Cumin tastes great, and helps make foods easier to digest. So does cooking them with kombu (a sea vegetable/type of sea weed.) Hope that helps : )
Be careful about the foods that you combine. Often things that cause no distress on their own will react with other foods in the digestive tract creating gas.
New vegetarians and vegans are often dealing with a gastric adjustment which take a little time. Like the gas itself it too will pass. Remember that you have just increased the fiber in your diet significantly which happily is sweeping the walls of your intestine clear of the impacted flesh food fecal matter. While this is a good thing, it may cause some gas to be passed along the way.
Beano can help. Given that it takes two weeks for the bulk of a meal of flesh foods to clear the colon and given that it leaves residue behind, at some point a high colonic enema may be a good idea also.
Digestive Aids.. also you need to study Food Combining.
Foods digest at different rates, when put together improperly they can cause this problem. It sound involved at 1st. but it’s really not.
I suggest you eat lots of fresh raw foods too, everything cooked is not healthy.
