How do I cook brown rice without drying it out?

I have a rice cooker and with when I make white rice, it turns out perfectly moist. However, I’m trying to switch over to brown rice for health reasons. Every time I I use brown rice in my rice cooker, it turns out way more dry than my white rice. Is there a trick? Should I add more water? Thanks!

brown rice requires more water.

for white rice, you use 1 cup rice to 2 cup water.

for brown rice use 1 cup brown rice to 2 1/2 cups water. check after 20 min, if it looks dry, add 1/3 cup more water to the pot.

I found brown rice is too dry anyway.

use more water. Brown rice is a whole grain unlike white rice, so you need to add more water and it will cook longer. I just started making brown rice and it’s very good.

add some low salt butter and a little more water.

Road Testing Saveur’s Perfect Brown Rice
Brown Rice has always been problematic. In general, folks know they should be trying to get more fiber into their diets but the time required to cook whole grains is often the deal breaker. I’ve gotten a lot of complaints from students that their attempts at cooking brown rice resulted in either undercooked rice or rice that was so mushy it resembled oatmeal.

Fear not fellow fiber seekers! Saveur has ridden to the rescue with their recipe for Saveur’s Perfect Brown Rice. I was skeptical at first, but I’ve tried this method a few times now with different brands of rice and I’m a believer. The thinking behind this method is cook brown rice like you would a pasta.

Start by rinsing the brown rice.

Bring 12 cups of water up to a roiling boil.

Add the rice, stir it and let it boil uncovered for thirty minutes.

Drain the rice and return it to the pot. Cover and allow it to stand for ten minutes, then fluff it up with a fork.

The results were delicious! Fluffy brown rice that was fully cooked. I tried this recipe using both one cup and two cups of raw rice to twelve cups of water. In both cases, the rice came out perfectly. I used brown rice in this recipe for Cuban Black Bean Stew with Rice. Yummy and good for you.
