Fiber Carbs?
Does the carbs in fiber count as normal carbs or does the fiber offset them. I heard that you shouldnt have to many carbs, but I also heard that if they are mostly from fiber rich foods, they arent as bad. I eat around 112 carbs and 24 grams of fiber a day. The carbs all come from oatmeal(not instant), black beans, organic brown rice, lentils, and kashi granola bars. Is this to many carbs for me, or is it ok because they are slow burning.

i think the carbs would be worse if they were white e.g white bread, pasta, rice, potatoes etc. coz you are eating the wholegrain stuff e.g brown rice, i dont think the carbs are as bad. Also you are eating some protein with the carbs and this keeps you satisfied for longer. I dont eat meat and alot of what i eat is based on brown spelt, beans, legumes….and i feel fuller by longer and dont crave sugary food. I wouldnt worry about the carb content, i think what your eating is great.
Apporximately 65 percent of your daily calories should come from carbohydrates. These are split into two different kinds; complex carbohydrates, and simple carbohydrates. Another name for complex carbohydrates is starches. The simple carbohydrates are bascically natural sugars, the ones you get from fruit. These simple carbohydrates should make up about 10 percent of your daily calories. Starches should make up about 55 perecent.
I think it’s fine, but I’m definitely not the greatest with that stuff. How many calories do you eat a day?
Congrats on getting 24 grams a fiber a day! That’s good, a lot of Americans don’t get enough.
Your diet sounds nutritious to me. You may get better answers in the Diet & Fitness section though.
With my husband recently being diagnosed diabetic, I have been learning all about carbs and how to count them.
Fiber carbs are counted as part of the total carb count. however if the fiber is more than 5 grams you can subtract that amount from the total carb count.
Example: if the product has 19g carbs, and 7g of that is fiber than you are having 12g of carbs. (subtract the 7 from the 19)
The brown rice in my cabinet has 33g of carbs, and of that 2g is fiber…so I have to count that as 33g of carbs since the fiber amount is not over 5g.
All foods have carbs, so dont forget to count any fruits and veggies you may be eating!
