Do you recommend a gluten free diet?

A gluten free diet is free of a protein found in wheat, kamut, spelt, barley, rye and triticale. I continue to eat wild rice, corn, buckwheat, millet, amaranth, quinoa, teff, oats, and sunflower seeds.

Dr. Mark Hyman suggested people should try a diet free of gluten this morning on television. Some people do have a disease called celiac disease, that impedes the digestion of gluten, but I suspect that I have a very mild aversion to gluten.

Do you recommend a gluten free diet for general health? I’ve already eliminated most packaged foods from my diet.

If you have even a mild aversion to gluten, then yes, you should eliminate gluten from your diet. People with celiac disease actually have damaged intestines and they can’t digest gluten. When a celiac patient continues eating gluten, it causes further damage to the intestines, eventually leading to Crohn’s disease. Yes, gluten free diets can benefit non-celiac patients, too, since it is totally possible to develop an intolerance or an allergy to gluten even if you didn’t previously have an intolerance to gluten.
