Do you need to boil corn to get the kernels off?

My mom wants me to get the kernels off the corn cob. I looked online and it said you can do it with a knife, but you have to boil the corn for 5 minutes. Do you HAVE to?

You can cut the kernel off a cob of corn with a knife on an uncooked cob of corn as well.

The kernels will not fall off by themselves. You will have to cut them off.

Remove the husks from the ears of corn. Grab the hairs from in-between the kernels and wash the now naked ears of corn.

Step 2Grab your sharp knife in one hand and place the ear of corn vertically on your cutting surface. This can be anything from a cutting board to the appropriate serving platter for the side dish. You want to place the flatter side of the corn on your surface, leaving the pointed end sticking up.

Step 3Cut into one side of the cob, and using a gentle sawing motion try to get as big of a kernel as you can with out gouging into the hardened center of the vegetable.

Step 4Repeat with the other three sides, this should result in a squared off look to the de-kerneled cob.

Here you can see it

No, you don’t have to, it just makes it easier. The Kernels will come off with a sharp knife, just be very careful. I’d snap the cob in half, then cut the kernels off because holding the whole cob while cutting off the corn, if you haven’t done this before, can be quite a task if you’re not very careful. Hope this helps you out today, happy cooking to you and your Mom!

they will come off easier if you cook them first

LOL! Of course not just go ahead and cut them off with a knife. If you do boil it you will have to wait until it is cold enough to handle and that will take some time. SO if you neeed it right away you should just go ahead and cut it off.

no you don’t have to boil it first.just use a sharp knife
