Do Southerners eat Turkey on Thankgiving?

Being that Thanksgiving originated with the Pilgrims in Massachusetts, I wonder if it is even that popular down south, or is Turkey and cranberry sauce is that popular a food down south or do you eat Ham instead for Thanksgiving or what?
Do grits and buckwheat cakes, or especially cornbread, or Poke Salad play any part in your Thanksgiving?

Well I live in NC and we eat turkey and cranberry sauce. Along with cornbread and potato salad..

grits for our family is more for breakfest

happy thanksgiving

Of course they eat turkey dinners. (It’s poke salet. I thought it was “salad” until I got older.) I know lots of people up north here who eat ham for Thanksgiving.

I’ve lived all over the USA and I’ve only met one person that doesn’t celebrate Thanksgiving.

Most people go with Turkey.

I’ve never heard of anyone having grits for Thanksgiving, but we do eat cornbread.

Of course we eat turkey,,,well, actually I am having Chicken and Dressing instead this year because DH wanted it…cranberry sauce is a must,,,,,We have ham on Christmas,,,along with a beef roast….and Chicken and Dumplings….

Grits….No…..buckwheat cakes? Never had one……Cornbread….you bet,,,I make it fresh for my Cornbread Dressing…..Poke Salad? Are you kidding….You can’t find that any more…Our Grandmothers might have ate that…we don’t…

Well yeah. Of course it maybe a fried turkey though!…lol

cornbread plays a huge role, as it is the main ingredient in dressing! yes, we all have turkey, although some people also have ham along with it. Other than that, we have the usually- veggies, cranberry sauce, pumpkin and pecan pie, rolls, etc

It is a very popular holiday all over the country, probably because it’s all about the feasting and the family and not about gifts or religion. I’ve lived in Texas, Florida, and North Carolina. The locals in all three of those states eat turkey for Thanksgiving, as well as cranberry sauce and (sometimes) cornbread. Some families have turkey AND ham, especially if there’s a large crowd. The thing you’ll see a lot of in the southern states you might not see up north is cornbread stuffing/dressing. What do Yankees use instead of cornbread dressing?

Grits are a breakfast food, kind of like Cream of Wheat or oatmeal. I’ve never even seen a buckwheat cake and I don’t know what poke salet is, so I couldn’t tell you if that’s important to a Southerner’s Thanksgiving.

Also, the Pilgrims in Massechusets more likely ate venison than turkey. And Thanksgiving wasn’t established as a formal holiday until Lincoln became president.

Not only are you thinking about the wrong states but may be the wrong century….

Most T-day affairs have the same cuisine…..

Reminds me of Foghorn Leghorn.
