Did you skip rice cereal? If so, what did you start with?

Ok! Solids! It’s time to start. I EBF (exclusively breast feed) and she will be 7mos later this week. We decided to start introducing solids. We got Beechnut wholegrain brown rice and mixed it with some of my b.milk and made sure it wasn’t cold and wasn’t hot and then letter her look at it, play with the spoon, we tried some and then let her try some and “gag!” she didn’t like it so much that she started gagging and her little eyes got red! LOL And it’s not because we gave her too much, there was less than a baby mouthful on a baby spoon :-)

So we want to do butternut squash or carrots. But what else could we do? What did you start with BESIDES cereal?

And we don’t want to use the fruit flavored cereal.

There are other cereals to try that some babies do better with, like the oatmeal. You could though just skip to veggies but hold off on fruits until you have introduced all the veggies because introducing fruits to soon can lead to a “sweet tooth”.

Give her oatmeal .. that has fiber.
I’ve never given my son rice cereal because it’s constipating.

Also, be sure to give her the cereal with a SPOON.

Feeding cereal to a baby in a bottle is a choking hazard.
We don’t drink cereal — neither should our baby :)

My son LOVES to ‘feed himself’ food .. and always wants to hold the spoon. Whenever I’m spoon feeding him something, I give him his own baby spoon to hold .. it keeps him from grabbing the spoon I’m feeding him with and he thinks he’s feeding himself :)

i don’t know why you don’t want to use a fruit cereal but whatever. i feed my 8 month old baby apple cereal every night before bed and she sleeps alot longer. the only baby food she will eat other than that cereal and formula is sweet potatoes, pears, peas. you can try feeding her whatever you want to as long as you start off with the 1st foods first. it’s recommended though that you give her veggies first then try fruits. try one kind per week so if she has food allergies you will know what u fed her and will know what not to feed her. hope this helped

My daughter loved her food, pumpkin, potato, mashed potato, banana, watermelon, apple, beans, etc.
I also just used to give her stuff from my dinner plate to see how she would go. You can pretty much try anything.
I also cooked and blended the vegies and froze them in ice cube trays and took them out and heated them as needed and she loved it.

Try giving her finger foods….let her be in charge of what goes in her mouth, ya know?

Break some cheerios in halves or quarters and let her figure it out.

We started my little one off on avocados (never had rice cereal). He was 6 1/2 months and was confused by the food….took him a few bites to understand what’s going on.

I’ve found that he’s not a fan of purees (I make his food from fresh veggies and fruits) but he LOVES soft, mushy foods he can put in his mouth himself.

He’s a HUGE fan of cheerios. I also chop up avocados into small bite sized pieces for him- bananas, too. I steam apples, pears, mangos, broccoli, carrots, sweet potatos, zucchini/squash and dice them up for him, too.

Hey, Introducing food more then once is the key to getting your baby to eat, just because she didn’t like it the first time just means you should try it again it takes a child a few times with certain food before they like will eat it!

what about potato and silver beat, maybe you could look at the jar foods and see what they use for a 7 month old baby then make it at home!

Try to star her on solids as soon as possible just put it in a blender. My aunts made their kids special foods untill they were 2 they never ate what everyone else ate and their kids all have food allergies. Just let her eat what you’re having.

My breastfeed son ate only oatmeal hated rice. He only ate sweet potato baby food later, refused all other. On regular food from early as he HATED baby food. Good luck.

When my son didn’t want his cereal (he was 4 months, though) I would still make him some, but instead of giving him the “scary and strange” spoon, I would dip a pacifier in the cereal so that he could actually take the time to taste it without being all freaked out by the spoon. A week or two later, I tried the spoon again, and since he was familiar with the taste he took it. and i gradually made the cereal a little thicker, and then started to try new cereals, like oatmeal, and the mixed grain. He always liked rice best, though. He started 1st foods (baby food) when he was around 5 1/2 mos. old. Good Luck! She will get used to solids, don’t worry, it just takes a little time!

My daughter turned 7 months two days ago. We will start solids this comming weekend. I have read quite a bit about starting with cereal versus starting with fruit/veggies. We have decided to start her on either cooked and pureed apple or cooked and pureed carrot and then go from there. She will also get cereal eventually – probably right after establishing apple and carrot. But only because most of them are iron fortified and I heard that they will need additional iron sometime.
I have also seen the flavored cereals and in my personal opinion this is something I don’t want. If she will have cereal with any flavor I will add some fruit to the plain kind, because I don’t think she should have artificial flavors …. But that is only my opinion
But you can check out the following link they give some suggestions on fruits and veggies to start with – they also discuss whether starting with cereal is necessary or not.

Sweet potatoes and avocados!

Both are still favorites of my kids. I can’t stand baby rice cereal, I think it’s such a freaking crock.

Basically, we did everything straight away, the only thing we held off on were berries, citrus, and egg whites. Everything else? You name it. I’d also give my babies bites of the same oatmeal I made for myself (old-fashioned rolled oats) or other whole grain hot cereals. Baby always gets what the rest of the family is eating (from hummus to soups.)

I tried starting my baby on rice cereal a little after 6 months and she had terrible tummy pain from it so we started her on veggies and fruits. You can either use the jarred food or you can make some stuff on your own, like mashed avocados, bananas or peas. It really doesn’t matter what you start with and it may take several tries before your baby is interested in any of these new foods, change is hard for babies.

Good luck with your baby!

It might just take time to get used to or maybe your mixture is just too thick. Try making it just barely thicker than water. The idea is to get her used to taking food from something other than a boob or a bottle and in the early days and weeks, it’s just for practice and for fun. She’ll be a champion eater in no time! I found that early on my babies would gag at any texture other than ‘almost liquid’.

Avocado and pear are very good first foods as well. I always started with rice, but just tiny amounts as it can be very constipating. The brown rice one you’re using I think has some fiber in it, so it’s not as bad as the plain white baby rice cereal. Barley and oatmeal are great (baby food versions of course early on).

Happy feeding! :)
