Decreased milk supply and PCOS. Help?

With my first baby, I started losing my milk when he was 10 months old, and I was completely dry by his first birthday. During that time I was drinking mothers milk tea and adding fenugreek seeds, using a rented hospital pump every 2 hours, and taking reglan.
The reglan helped, but my supply was still dwindling.

Now My second baby will be 8 months in a couple of days, and I’m noticing my supply decreasing.
I’m drinking mother’s milk tea. I could probably drink more.
I really don’t want to go through the rigors and heartbreak that I went through the first time if it’s not going to work.
Please help me! I really want to be able to nurse my baby!
Miki – I know I’m lucky it lasted this long, but I’m still brokenhearted. My midwife was shocked that I had my milk in the day my daughter was born because of my PCOS.
Ellie – I haven’t had my ovaries looked at in a long time, but I know they are bad, I can feel it. I took too much birth control and progesterone for too long, I just don’t want to take it anymore, so I kind of just let it go.

When you say low sugar, do you also mean fruit sugar or just refined sugars? I do drink fruit juice and eat fruit, but I water my juice down a lot, and I don’t usually eat sweets. I also don’t eat tons of protein, I limit it and overload myself with greens.

JUST USE THE FENUGREEK PILLS AND STOP TAKING THE TEA

at least your milk supply lasted that long. mine never picked up pace. i have pcos and hypothyroidism.

There is a whole list of herbs you can take at mobimotherhood.org. Great site!! most herbs are available at gnc.
You can also try domperidone or shavatari ( i think i spelled it right!!)
Remember to think of the gift you already gave if something should happen. I was not able to nurse either child very long due to low milk supply (had to supplement from day 1) :(
Best of luck!!
Let me know if you want more detailed info on anything.

I have PCOS as well and am currently breastfeeding my 9 month old. I’m taking Domperidone, which I’m sure is helping tremendously. But, I’ve also read that following a low sugar/high protein diet can help. Even moderate exercise. How out of control is your PCOS?

Here is an article that LLL put out on PCOS:

It grates on my nerves when I read someone say that there is no such thing as not having enough milk. In our cases, it truly can be an issue.

Best of luck and great for you for nursing this long!!

Edit: It’s all about maintaining a good blood sugar level. Even a diabetic diet can help. You don’t want to ever spike your blood sugar because the surge of insulin in your system (needed to bring down the sugar levels) raises testosterone levels which is why women with PCOS have poor milk supply, facial hair, odd periods…and the other gambit of symptoms.

Something like South Beach or a diabetic diet could do wonders for you. Limiting the units of carbs you take in, eating small meals throughout the day and getting moderate exercise are all great ways to stabilize blood sugar levels. If you have a glucometer you can test your sugar levels after a meal to show you how certain foods effect you. For example…an apple absolutely kills my sugar levels but bananas have no effect.

Please please please feel free to email me if you want to talk more about this. I was basically told after I had my son that I would never be able to breast feed, but we’ve been able to make it work. I was also told I would never be able to have a baby…but they were wrong about that as well. ;-)

(I’m going to star this so that hopefully some of my wonderful contacts can help as well)
