If you want Haley to have fun when she is outside the cage, put her in a small room first and when you can trust her enough to not get hurt, then play with her in a bigger room, or even around your house, as long as there are no open windows, doors, and no open fire. You could also give her little baths in the bathroom but don’t put the water too high as it can result to your cockatiel to drowning.
In order for your friend’s cockatiel to mate with your cockatiel, they have to spend TONS of time together. You guys can always have a playtime afterschool everyday so that they could see each other, or you could borrow your friends cockatiel for a while until they breed, but it takes a long time though.
HOPE I HELPED:]]
Don’t breed her unless you’re prepared for the responsibility of baby birds. Ask the breeders and rescuers here–it’s a lot of hard work and takes a lot of time. Also, just putting a male and female together doesn’t mean they’ll mate–they might fight instead. Cockatiels can be territorial. What would be easy to do is put the cages near each other and let them talk/sing to each other some.
Edit: Hey, tielmom–nice to see someone else who’s a bird slave. My ‘tiel walks all over me–literally.
If you’re prepared for babies and have done your research, that’s one thing, but how will breeding her to your friend’s male cockatiel make your baby girl less afraid? If you put them together, there’s a good chance they’ll bond to each other and will not be as friendly to their humans, too. Have you thought of that and does the owner of the male ‘tiel know that?
You asked if it was a good idea–the answer seems to be no.
Concentrate instead on bonding more closely with her and spending more time with her yourself so she trusts you and is not scared. There have been some good suggestions. Bird-proof a room, take her into it and turn her loose to explore and play. Give her some new toys. I’ve spent $100 on new toys a couple of times. Treat her to unsalted in-shell peanuts. Some birds go crazy for these. Sing to her and talk to her more. Good luck!
To spice up her “out-of-cage” time, offer her small things to play with, like pony beads, plastic drinking straws cut into 2-inch pieces, and q-tips. You’ll find she’ll enjoy carting them about and playing a game called “my human picks them up”.
You can also offer her foods that are also play items like air popped popcorn (no salt), broccoli, spinach leaves, carrot curls, etc. Good foods offered as a play toy rapidly become part of a nutritious diet.
I would not recommend you breed your tiel to your friends tiels. Tiels are not like dogs or cats that breed and move on. Tiels bond to their mates and the male takes a huge part of incubating the eggs and feeding the chicks. Then, when the babies are about 6 weeks old, they start the process all over again. If you were to remove the male, she would mourn the loss just like you would mourn the loss of your spouse. Please don’t do this……
hey tielmomn what typeon lipstick do u wear? black? purple? are you goth? i am
Just give her some time to adjust
well i have the same bird too. if your bird is scared of coming out . just open the door of the cage it will come out by it self. and try to buy her a toy with mirror on it. they love looking at the mirror.
