Cat food dilemma: please help?
Hey everyone, I recently adopted a beautiful cat (3 years old) from a friend and I’m keen to make sure she gets fed good, healthy food. The vet I go to has recommended two products, and I was wondering if the catfood experts could advise me: 1. Royal Canin (ingredients: dehydrated poultry meal, maize, animal fat, maize gluten, poultry by-product meal, fish oil, BHT) or 2. Hill’s Science Diet (Chicken and Turkey meal, ground maize, ground rice, maize gluten meal, tocopherals and rosemary)… those are the ingredients (mostly) of the two. Any ideas? Experts please help! Oh, and I’m also feeding her canned food as well, but will need to use dry also as my schedule is unstable and I want to make sure my cat always has some food to eat!

Hi Your vet sorely lacks nutritional knowledge. Check out the links in here and learn what the ingrediants mean as well as what is good and not good for your cat. Good for you for reading the label and asking. Which more would read what they are feeding a carnivore.
Canned foods can be left out all day even though it dries out.
Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingredient a muscle meat like chicken or is it meal or other things? Learn what meal and other things mean here….
Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms of food allergies probably from the grains. Constipation? Dry food, not enough moisture. Blockages? Again not enough moisture in the food and you are risking something serious. People on this board say feed fiber but this is a cat not a dog and cats are obligate carnivores unlike dogs an they don’t eat cereal and don’t need fiber.
The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food (Cats are not naturally big drinkers) but in
Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don’t use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn’t have corn at all or grains at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. Fancy feast is a middle grade food as it uses a muscle meat as the first ingrediant. 9lives, friskies whiskas are lower grade canned but still better then dry and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. The optimum food to feed cats has no grains whatsoever, cats have no use for them and many have trouble processing them as well as the carbs. IBD is another disease that is rapidly becoming common amoung cats because of the inappropriate diets being fed.
Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? Why do people constantly repeat this old wives tale and put teeth over the organs like the kidneys?? (I have no clue) …
Please read about cat nutrition. ………
Hi Christopher L,
Congratulations on your new arrival! It is so exciting to get a cat and thank you for adopting her.
Dehydrated poultry meal is not a good protein source, and cats don’t need any grain in their diets. In selecting a really great food, the first ingredient should be meat- not a by product or something that has been dehydrated.
I am afraid that most veterinarians don’t receive great training in kitty nutrition. Cats are obligate carnivores and as such, need meat as their main source of food. You don’t want corn or gluten, or rice. Cats require a low carbohydrate diet.
For an excellent article on feeding a feline, read:
This was written by a veterinarian who is one of the leading experts in feline nutrition.
Cats actually do fine with two meals a day. For an average size cat, 5.5 to 6 oz. daily of a high quality canned food is perfect for them. Dry food can lead to food allergies, and digestive problems. It was actually made for human convenience not for the convenience of cats. Additionally cats tend to gain weight through free feeding.
We use Wellness cat food which can be purchased on the Internet if you don’t have a local store that sells it. Hills products are pushed by veterinarians who sell the products. They are also trained in feline nutrition mainly by representatives of the Hills company.
Hope this helps. Glad you are inquiring about your cat’s dietary needs.
There is one flavor of Fancy Feast that is grain free. It is one of the turkey varieties. Check the labels on their products to find the turkey one to which I am referring. It comes in a can with a green label.
Take care,

I’ve used Science Diet, Iam’s, and Purina One, at different times in my 13 cats’ lives.
Since I have cats, now, from 3 yrs to 15 yrs, I use Purina One Adult and Purina One Senior (w / yogurt)
Both of these have chicken as their 1st ingredient. That’s the important thing for me………meat first! Not any kind of meal, as the 1st ingredient. They also have brewer’s rice as their 2nd ingredient, My cats are all healthy, with shiny coats and bright, clear eyes.
So, my recommendation would be Purina One Adult for your 3 yrs old cat.
Enjoy……….Good luck.
Run as far as you can from those two foods. The RC has BHT which is a carcinogen. Hills has tried to disguise the corn as maize. Isn’t that precious?
It’s good that you’re feeding some wet, and it’s understandable that you’ll need to feed some dry. Not the end of the world.
My picks for good foods are in the links below.
