Can you please help me choose which bread would be healthier?
I was at H-E-B looking for breads for people with Diabetes since I was recently diagnosed. They had two different kinds by two different brands. One was by the H-E-B Bake Shop and was made with Hi-maize. This is basically what it read: Hi-maize helps to maintain healthy blood sugar levels within the normal range by improving insulin sensitivity in healthy people.* Hi-maize also reduces the glycemic and insulin response of foods when substituted for flour or other rapidly digested carbohydrates.* So that all sounds good but then when I look at the Nutritional Facts it has 3 grams of Sugar per slice which is bad. Then i see one from a Diff brand that is whole wheat and it says Sugar Free. The nutritional facts on this bread has 0 grams of Sugar per slice. So which bread would be healthier for me if i am a Type 1 Diabetic? I don’t care about the taste, my health is all that matters. Thanks to all who answer in Advance =)

whoa, that’s a hard one..
I would go for the hi maize. 3 grams of sugar is very little.
What are the health benefits of resistant starch?
Improves the health of the bowel by encouraging the development of strong healthy cells and beneficial bacteria.
Increases the levels of short chain fatty acids (SCFA), in particular butyrate (pronounced bewtir-ate) which is considered to be vital for optimum bowel health and may be protective against colorectal cancer.
Mild laxative effect to help “keep you regular”.
When added to carbohydrate foods like bread, resistant starch beneficially lowers the glycemic response of foods by releasing glucose into the bloodstream at a regular steady rate.
Population studies show that as the amount of starch in the diet increases the incidence of colon cancer decreases which is thought to be due to the higher levels of resistant starch contained in such diets.
The taste should be same as without hi maize. Try it one week and then try the whole wheat. See if you test better with one or the other.
My husband and I are both type 2 diabetics. We went to a dietitian on the recommendation of our doctor. The dietitian told us to eat 100% whole wheat bread with at least 2grams of fiber. She said that the 100% whole wheat bread would pass through our system faster, therefore not raising the blood glucose.
We use Sara Lee, Soft and Smooth 100% whole wheat. Yes, it has 3 grams of sugar, but that is not very high. On our diet we are allowed to have a controlled amount of things with sugar in it. We have been on this same bread for about 11/2 years. It has not had any bad effects on our blood glucose numbers. Infact both are normal. We love the taste over other wheat breads we have tryed.
You might want to ask your doctor which bread would be the best for you. Everyone is different and has different needs, so I would ask.
Whole grain bread is the best.
