Can you explain the difference between sugar and sugar alcohol?
My mom is diabetic so we try and get her sugar free candy sometimes. Some of the candy the sugar free chocolate has sugar alcohol. I know alcohol can also lead to diabetes, so what is the difference between sugar – sugar alcohol – and alcohol. Thanks.
Can someone answer the question and explain the difference?

They are commonly used for replacing sucrose in foodstuffs, often in combination with high intensity artificial sweeteners to counter the low sweetness. Some common sugar alcohols are:
erythritol
isomalt
lactitol
maltitol
mannitol
sorbitol
xylitol
The amount of carbohydrates is the important thing in maintaining good glucose levels. Check food labels for carbohydrate levels. Sugar alcohol is meaning less to a diabetic. Go to: and get their “The Doctor’s Pocket Calorie Fat & Carbohydrate counter.”. It has Carbohydrate amounts of thousands of foods and beverages.
not much difference. as the first answerer sez sugar comes in many forms some worse then others but ALL is bad. count carbs for best health.
Sugar alcohol is derived from sugar but has an alcohol chemical make-up. They have sweetening properties but provide fewer calories therefore they don’t impact blood sugar in the same way that sugar does.
